Tech: Could Mozilla’s Firefox lose its biggest funding source: Google?

  • growth Over the years, Mozilla’s open-source Firefox browser grew from nothing to provide a solid secondary option to Microsoft’s once-dominant Internet Explorer. It funded itself in large part from a multi-year deal it made with Google to make their search the default, allowing Mozilla to grow quickly.
  • hindrance However, since they made the last deal in 2008, a strange thing started happening — Google created a browser of its own, Chrome, that quickly ate its own share of the market. It’s now tied with or ahead of Firefox. So … will Google renew the deal with Mozilla? Do they need to? source

Offbeat: Some genius figured out how to put Jimmy Wales on every site

  • Meet our new favorite extension ever. Some clever bastard decided to make a Google Chrome extension that takes those Jimmy Wales guilt-you-into-donating banners and puts one on EVERY. SINGLE. PAGE. Here’s one on Encyclopedia.com, just to show the power of this amazing, immaculate banner. Worth an installation just for a laugh. source

Tech: New browser startup Rockmelt lies to us right off the bat

  • Yeah yeah, Toby… You think you’ll be able to charm us into downloading a copy of the Rockmelt beta by talking about your apartment above a bar with turtle racing … but we have a secret for you guys. Moorhead’s Scottish Pub doesn’t exist! We don’t care if Marc Andreessen managed to get a bunch of the old Netscape gang back together for this one. Or that you’re based off of Chromium. Or that you’re not as cluttered as that other browser with the same idea, Flock. You lied to us, and we don’t know what to believe anymore. TO-BY. source

Offbeat, Tech: Opera is faster than a potato, but does it really matter?

  • Google Chrome’s impressive browser tests were very ripe for a parody, and Opera has heeded the call with this awesome ad, which tries to see whether Opera is faster than a potato. (Spolier alert: Yes.) Nice execution, dudes.

Tech: Rube Goldberg would be proud of this Google Chrome ad

  • OMG OMG THAT’S FAST! This Google Chrome ad was shot using a 2700 fps camera to show how fast the rendering speed of the pages were. And in every case used here, it was faster than lightning. This advertising campaign is nothing but win. source

Tech: Regarding Google Chrome Frame, Microsoft lays a line of BS

  • It doesn’t even matter what they say after this half-quote: “Given the security issues with plugins in general and Google Chrome in particular…” everybody should download Google Chrome Frame now? Is that what you’re gonna tell us, Microsoft spokesperson, about the plugin that Google made to make Web developers’ lives easier because you made a sucky browser called Internet Explorer 6? OHHHHHHHH NO. “… Google Chrome Frame running as a plugin has doubled the attach area for malware and malicious scripts. This is not a risk we would recommend our friends and families take.” Shut up, Microsoft. You’re just fearmongering. source

Tech: Google doesn’t need an OS for the PC, ’cause it already has one

  • Last night, Google surprised the tech-hungry masses just getting to bed by announcing that they are going to release a new operating system called Chrome OS designed to work with Netbooks and PCs and compete with Microsoft. source
  • Strangely enough, just the day before, an open-source group released version 0.2 of Live-Android, which just happens to be a version of Google’s mobile OS designed to boot on x86 PCs. Wait, you mean they have two OSes for PCs now? source

Tech: Livin’ on the wild side: Google Chrome hits Mac & Linux, kinda

  • It’s not ready yet. But that didn’t stop us. Despite the warnings of instability and incomplete features, that was not enough to stop us, and we’re sure hundreds of other nerds, from downloading a pre-beta build of the long-awaited Google Chrome ports. Google warned us: “Whatever you do, please DON’T DOWNLOAD THEM! Unless of course you are a developer or take great pleasure in incomplete, unpredictable, and potentially crashing software.” But we didn’t listen. It’s super-fast but it doesn’t play YouTube videos yet. Oooh, edgy. source

Tech: Another attack on Microsoft by the European Union

  • IE’s the focus again The European Union, acting on a key part of Microsoft’s business, sent a statement of objections Microsoft for bundling Internet Explorer in copies of Windows. Sound familiar? It’s the same kind of antitrust fight that the U.S. fought against MS 12 years ago. This time, as opposed to Netscape being the victim of unfair practices, Opera’s making the complaint. source

  • An open door for alternatives With this latest case, the quickly-declining market leader could be damaged more, and it’s all thanks to a 2007 EU decision which prevented Microsoft from “tying” its Media Player to Windows. Regulators aim to force the company to offer alternatives in its default installation, such as Opera, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome, thereby giving customers a choice. source
