Tech: Rube Goldberg would be proud of this Google Chrome ad

  • OMG OMG THAT’S FAST! This Google Chrome ad was shot using a 2700 fps camera to show how fast the rendering speed of the pages were. And in every case used here, it was faster than lightning. This advertising campaign is nothing but win. source

Offbeat: It sucks being a pedestrian when someone’s reliving “Speed”

  • “THIS BUS CAN’T GO SLOWER THAN 50 MILES AN HOUR! There’s a bomb on the bus that will go off if we go slower than that. This guy crossing the street, we may hit him, but we can’t stop!”

Politics: John McCain: Obama is living Ricky Nelson’s “Garden Party”

  • I think the great danger now is a half-measure, sort of a – you know, try to please all ends of the political spectrum. And, again, I have great sympathy for the president, making the toughest decisions that presidents have to make, but I think he needs to use deliberate speed.
  • Sen. John McCain • Doing what he always does – sounding brilliant when the stakes are low for him. Regarding Afghanistan (but really relevant for every part of his presidency), he tells Obama that it’s alright now, as long as he learns his lesson well. You see, he can’t please everyone, so he’s got to please himself. And he needs to do it fast. So, why didn’t we elect this guy for president? Oh yeah, because he fell victim to the very indecisiveness and political gaming that’s muddling Obama’s presidency. McCain speaks from experience, Barack. • source

  • 20% Percentage of users’ time spent on the popular CB, or chat, service.
  • 10 Number of major daily newspapers on the service by 1982. Here’s a video.
  • 2009 The year AOL finally killed Compuserve’s iconic service. Sigh. source

Tech: If you’re on AT&T with your iPhone, your 3G will go faster soon

  • AT&T is upgrading their network, with a nationwide rollout soon. 3G speeds are pretty fast, but it could be faster. As a result, the phone company is adding speed upgrades which should boost the already zippy theoretical speed from 1.7 Mbps to 3.6Mbps. But those numbers are misleading – real world usage is currently about 700Kbps. The boost should hit by the end of the year in most markets, and AT&T is also working on a 4G network. As long as we can use our hacked iPhones to download torrents, we’re happy. source
