Sports: Fighting words: Lance Armstrong takes on French drug testers

  • This is just another example of the improper behavior by the French laboratory and the French anti-doping organizations. I am sorry that they are disappointed that all the tests were negative, but I do not use any prohibited drugs or substances.
  • Lance Armstrong • In a statement earlier this week. Since ticking them off by taking a shower, Armstrong has gone out on the offensive over the drug-testing agency in France, who he has had a strained relationship with. He says the agency may prevent him from racing in the Tour de France – you know, the reason he unretired in the first place. • source

Music, World: M.I.A. is ticking off the Sri Lankan government again

  • Many have already perished from starvation and preventable disease. We cannot ignore these genocidal conditions, and if the aim of the SL Government is to protect the lives of the civilians, then this ship will reach its destination and lives will be saved.
  • M.I.A. (a.k.a. Maya Arulpragasam) • Who’s put herself in the middle of a conflict between the Sri Lankan government and the U.K.-based Act Now organization, which is trying to send aid to the country which is supposed to be for civilians caught in the conflict between Sri Lanka and the Tamil Tigers, but the Sri Lankan military fears may be headed for Tamil forces. She’s ruffled these feathers before. • source

Biz, Politics: Dear Associated Press: You’re not the only game in town

  • The dispute The Associated Press, one of the most-quoted and most-highly-regarded wire services, wants to battle Web sites who use their content – even under commentary and fair use standards – head-on. “We can no longer stand by and watch others walk off with our work under some very misguided, unfounded legal theories,” said AP chair Dean Singleton, who we cited directly from an insightful AP article on the topic. source

  • Our suggestion The wire service currently is still debating how to do this, but here’s how we think they should handle it. They should set up a satellite, AP-1, put it into orbit, implant mind chips into their audience and whenever someone even thinks about reading a newspaper article anywhere besides a newspaper, they’ll get a small, corrective electric shock. Sound idiotic, malformed and unrealistic? That’s because it is, just like this stupid idea. source

  • We’ll just use Reuters If this crazy idea that a bunch of out-of-touch newspaper publishers conjured up gains legs, it’s OK. There are lots of other places to gather content. And to blame this on blogs and Google News, this is beyond unwise; you could speed up the very road to irrelevancy that you’re trying to prevent with a move like this. Only people who don’t understand the Internet would suggest this idea. Good job screwing it up, old guys. source

Culture: Octet mom Nadya Suleman: My angels-in-waiting? Not really angels.

  • They were apparently spying on her. Suleman, who has 14 kids, in case you haven’t heard, claims the nonprofit Angels in Waiting has not exactly been very cool to her throughout their agreement. The group was providing training services to nannies paid on Suleman’s dime. (They initially offered around-the-clock service, but scaled back.) The group apparently was making complaints to child services. “It started out adversarial and never really resolved itself,” said Suleman attorney Jeff Czech. source
