World: Massive Mexican prison riot: Not exactly what it seems?

  • whatIn a Mexican prison, 44 prisoners died in an early-morning riot Sunday. The riot, wich lasted around two hours, stemmed from a conflict between two cell blocks of around 750 prisoners each, many of whom were held without convictions. It was one of the deadliest prison riots since the Drug War gained steam.
  • why? Some rioters may have belonged to rival gang factions. Those rivals were normally separated within the prison, however, leading some to suspect that the guards used the fight as a cover to allow for a prison escape. The guards on duty at the time have been detained, along with their supervisors and the director of the prison. source

Culture: Dramatic fight at the U.S. Open, from three different angles

  • From the court Here’s what tennis fans saw if they were watching at home. And yeah, it was epic enough that it actually stopped the match. Bonus points for the use of the word “fisticuffs.” It’s not often that a boxing match breaks out at a tennis match.
  • From a distance Here’s a shot from a little bit away. You can’t make out what the guy is saying here. He never lays a hand on the lady, but still gets hit pretty badly. The dad falls down hard. The young guy is blamed even though he did nothing wrong.
  • From up closeHere’s the real story: The old couple was upset that this dude liked using the F-word, so she yelled at him. Then her dad dramatically decked him. Sorry lady; it’s a public forum. On a side note: Shut up, “Throw the Bum Out” dude. source

Offbeat: These guys have too many T-shirts, too much time on their hands

  • These guys have 222 T-shirts, and two days. They also have a stupidly clever idea on their hands. They probably need to get outside more often, but let’s laugh at them while they’re still inside! We won’t spoil the best parts of the video.

World: Silvio Berlusconi, fresh off Nosegate, wants to take on the Mafia

We almost don’t recognize him without the blood all over his face. Anyway, he’s trashing on portrayals of Italians as gangsters, which is hypocritical ’cause he looks like one. source

Offbeat: Protip: When you start fighting streetlamps, you’re probably drunk

  • He must have been very drunk because when he ran out of passers-by he began to shout at the lampposts, similarly challenging them to ‘have a go’.
  • Perth, Scotland Fiscal depute Stuart Richardson • Describing drunken lout David Robinson, 22, who wanted to get in a fistfight with someone but couldn’t find any takers. So instead, he attempted to attack his fury out on a streetlamp. Too much beer, dude, too much beer. • source

Politics: Obama could make or break his presidency on health care

  • It goes without saying that a lot is riding now on his ability to re-energize the health care debate and bring it home to a successful conclusion. Nothing will influence the perception of the presidency more than whether he can be successful in getting a health care bill through the Congress.
  • Obama adviser John D. Podesta • On Obama’s need to win the health care debate. There’s a lot riding on it – if he loses this fight, it could irreparably damage his presidency. So, as he gets back to work from his vacation, watch closely – these next few weeks are critical for the president. • source

Offbeat: Fighting Paris suburbs pit two one-way streets against each other

  • left The conservative French suburb of Levallois-Perret, annoyed by the large amounts of traffic coming from the city, made one of its major roads a one way street, which is kind of selfish.
  • right In response to the traffic buildup caused, a neighboring suburb, Clichy-la-Garenne, made traffic go the other way on the road. At the two towns’ borders, chaos ensued. Yikes. source
