U.S.: This year, Santa taught one Arizona family to never give up hope.

  • an honest-to-goodness christmas miracle. Nobody thought Sam Schmid, a business major at Arizona State University, was going to recover from a traumatic car crash in October; his family was ready to take him off life support. His doctor ran just one more brain scan and advised them to wait a week before making any decisions. That same day, Schmid became responsive and even opened his eyes. He was allowed one day to be at home with his family for Christmas. With intense therapy, he hopes to be back at school next year. “There is no better gift,” his mother said. source

World: Nelson Mandela’s symbolic World Cup appearance cut short by tragedy

  • We are sure that South Africans and people all over the world will stand in solidarity with Mr. Mandela and his family in the aftermath of this tragedy.
  • A statement from Nelson Mandela’s people • Regarding the tragic, unexpected death of his great-granddaughter, Zenani, just before the opening ceremonies of the World Cup. Zenani, 13, died in a car crash – preventing Mandela from making the ceremony, a much-heralded appearance on the level of his heralding of the victorious South African rugby team in the 1995 Rugby World Cup. Why so symbolic? Well, rugby was traditionally associated with the Afrikaner elite, whereas soccer had ties with the black population. So it’s very unfortunate that he won’t be able to appear tonight. source

U.S.: Laura Bush on the deadly crash from her teenage days

  • In those awful seconds, the car door must have been flung open by the impact and my body rose in the air until gravity took over and I was pulled, hard and fast, back to earth. … The whole time, I was praying that the person in the other car was alive. In my mind, I was calling ‘Please, God. Please, God. Please, God,’ over and over and over again.
  • Former First Lady Laura Bush • Regarding the deadly crash which happened when she was 17 and living in Midland, Tx. She wrote about it in her new book, “Spoken From the Heart.” The 1963 crash, which happened when she and a friend were rushing to a drive-in theater, took the life of a star athlete at her school, Mike Douglas. Douglas was driving a Corvair, the car her husband’s future third-party presidential opponent, Ralph Nader, made the subject of “Unsafe at Any Speed.” Bush also notes that many things made the intersection a fairly unsafe one – including a small stop sign, which Bush ran, and a pitch-black road with a dangerous intersection. Still though, harrowing experience for the First Lady to go through, and probably one that had a deep effect on the rest of her life. source

Culture: Charlie Sheen’s SUV driven off steep cliff – without Charlie Sheen

  • The quote in this article from Sheen is hilarious. This morning, Charlie Sheen’s Mercedes SUV was found driven off a cliff after it was stolen last night. Nobody was found inside. This morning, Sheen made perhaps the best one-liner in his entire career: “It was nice to have police come to my house and for once and I didn’t have to leave with them.” LOL. Pitch perfect. source

Offbeat: Like lemmings, these cars hit an icy road and crash EVERYWHERE

  • Man, we sure like our tower. We can look at videos like this and just be happy we weren’t a party to any of this. Not a single car – even the parked ones, which probably got it worse – on this icy road went unscathed after it got so slick as to turn the road into a massive pinball game where the only winner is you, the viewer.

Culture: Dear Tiger Woods: Come clean. Let us know what’s up.

  • Holding off is just making it more obvious that something happened. Tiger – we don’t admit to knowing what happened between you and your wife. We pulled open that copy of National Enquirer just to see what it said, but have no proof of anything. All we know is that you and your wife look like you’re hiding something by not talking to the press OR – more notably – the police. You get the benefit of the doubt, man, but stop hiding. OK? source

Culture: Was the Tiger Woods crash a domestic violence incident against Tiger?

  • earlier One of our regular commenters suggested that the Tiger Woods incident screamed “scorned woman beating incident.”
  • now The very report that TMZ came out with late last night suggests this exact scenario. Is Elin Nordegren angry? source
