Culture: The incestuous, pay-for-play world of celebrity gossip sites

  • There’s this unbelievable hunger for a constant flow of information about these people. So everybody has to feed this machine all the time.
  • Lindsay Lohan’s lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley • Offering an explanation for why her client is always in the news. Essentially, the $3 billion entertainment gossip industry — specifically, sites like TMZ, Perez Hilton and Radar Online — needs her. The New York Times’ sprawling piece on celebrity gossip sites, which includes interviews with Michael Lohan (along with an explanation of how he made a bunch of money off Jon Gosselin) and an explanation of how the Los Angeles Coroner’s Department has had to fend off gossip reporters climbing over walls in an attempt to catch a photo of a deceased celebrity. (They’ve had two major leaks — death certificates of Michael Jackson and Brittany Murphy.) All in the hunt for hits, guys. source

Culture: Was the Tiger Woods crash a domestic violence incident against Tiger?

  • earlier One of our regular commenters suggested that the Tiger Woods incident screamed “scorned woman beating incident.”
  • now The very report that TMZ came out with late last night suggests this exact scenario. Is Elin Nordegren angry? source

Culture: Funnyman drama: Another former Letterman intern comes forward

  • I was madly in love with him at the time. I would have married him. He was hilarious.
  • Hollywood producer Holly Hester • Describing her relationship with David Letterman in the early ’90s. The two of them had a year-long, secret romance which Letterman ended because of the age difference. The New York Daily News tried to interview her, but TMZ got there first and apparently offered her a lot of money. One thing that came out of Hester’s interview: Letterman has a secret bedroom directly above his studio. Well, he is the host of the show! • source

Culture: TMZ said Maya Angelou was in the hospital. They were wrong. Ha!

  • They’re usually right about these sorts of things. From scooping every other mainstream media outlet by hours on Michael Jackson’s death to getting the photo of the Rihanna after the attack by Chris Brown, they usually nail the facts. But not this time. Word is that Angelou, who they said was rushed to an L.A. hospital, wasn’t even in L.A. at the time. Good job, goobers. source

Culture: Chris Brown: I didn’t forget the attack, like I told Larry King

  • The first four times – or how ever many times it was – I gave the same answer — which was that I didn’t think it was appropriate for me to talk about what happened that night. I said it was not right for me and it really wasn’t fair to Rihanna. The fifth time – or whatever it was – I just misspoke.
  • A statement by Chris Brown • In an attempt at damage control after a devastating interview with Larry King where he said he had no recollection of attacking Rihanna in February. Based on the poll that TMZ is offering, we’re guessing that he lost any chance at sympathy because of the interview. Dude’s career is probably over after this. He screwed up the Larry King fall-from-grace interview – the softest-pedal interview you can find on televison. It’s all over from here. • source

Culture: In a world of bizarre porn parodies, this TMZ one takes the cake

  • Ron Jeremy as Harvey Levin. No, really. Obviously, we’re a safe for work site and we’re not linking to a porn site, but we’d be terrible at our job if we didn’t inform you of the existence of TMSlease, a parody of TMZ (and celebrity culture in general) which takes a look at gossip culture through porn. Ron Jeremy, by the way, does a great Harvey Levin parody. (The link leads to Gawker, BTW.) source

Culture: Like watching child birth? How about eight at once, say, an octet?

  • There’s a video. TMZ was offered it for sale. The video, which shows the beauty of childbirth more times than you might want to see in one setting, was offered to numerous media outlets, but the agency brokering the deal put a temporary hold on the sale on Friday. Yo Nadya, please leave this treasured moment in the family video collection – we beg of you. source

Culture: Tommy Lee’s helicopter pulled over, a.k.a. the best story ever

  • What happened? Lee, a rock star you may have heard of from a few videos, was riding shotgun in a helicopter that was flying too close to a LAPD copter in Glendale, Calif. Their helicopter was pulled over. We wish our life was this interesting.
  • Drinking afterwards? TMZ.com, which broke the story (because they’re that awesome) claims that Lee was drinking immediately after landing, and was given a blood-alcohol test by the cops. The FAA is still investigating the incident, and the pilot might face charges. source
