  • 1/8/2011 Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot through the head during a town hall event outside a Safeway in Tucson, Arizona. The shooter was Jared Lee Loughner, a man of obvious mental illness who killed six people that day. Giffords, however, survived and was rushed into intensive care.

World: Terrible human suffering at hospital in Bahrain

  • Truly heartbreaking video: Al Jazeera English takes us to a hospital in Bahrain, where doctors and medical staff are treating people horribly abused, beaten and teargassed. Many, it seems, have taken to sleeping in the hospital, so fearful are they about being caught up in the violence if they venture outside or return home. source

Politics: Lara Logan released from hospital, in “remarkably good spirits”

  • good news on the lara logan front. It’s being reported that Logan has been dismissed from the hospital following her “brutal and sustained sexual assault” in Cairo. While an unnamed source claims that, fortunately, Logan’s assault was “not a rape,” we can hardly imagine of the terror of it, especially in the context of a wild, tumultuous scene in Tahrir Square. Logan is reportedly in surprisingly good spirits, and is home with her family. Best wishes for her, and for her recovery. Relatedly, though, film critic Roger Ebert had this to say: “The attack on Lara Logan brings Middle East attitudes toward women into sad focus.” We’re all for somberly analyzing the broad implications of specific events, but really? Unless you can’t imagine a woman in America being sexually assaulted in a chaotic mob, it seems a little cheap and easy to paint a whole part of the world with the brush of this horrible event. Still, better than Nir Rosen’s analysis was. source

U.S.: Obama orders added hospital visitation rights for gays, lesbians

  • He says they’re “uniquely affected” by relatives-only policies at hospitals. The Obama administration today asked the Department of Health and Human Services to establish a rule to make sure that gays and lesbian partners have the same rights of visitation as straight partners do. “There are few moments in our lives that call for greater compassion and companionship than when a loved one is admitted to the hospital,” he said on the memo, “Yet every day, all across America, patients are denied the kindnesses and caring of a loved one at their sides.” source

Culture: Rush Limbaugh rushed to the hospital with chest pains

  • The uber-conservative icon was vacationing in Hawaii. Much like Obama and Nancy Pelosi, Rush Limbaugh decided to stay in the sun during the holidays. He was golfing earlier this week. But after a bout with chest pains, he was taken to the hospital today. We’ll keep you posted on our favorite blowhard’s condition. source
  • Update (2:16 a.m.): Our boy is resting comfortably. Also, some liberals on Twitter are being complete douchebags tonight. If you follow this site at all, you know it skews a little left, but at least tries to give both sides a fair shake. Hoping someone you don’t like dies is just awful. Stop it – you’re better than that, kids. *hand slap*

Culture: Tiger Woods drama: Uh, holy crap. Who’s on that stretcher?

  • Whoever’s on that stretcher isn’t looking so hot. This morning, a 911 call came from the home of Tiger Woods, leading to someone taken to the hospital on a stretcher from a nearby house. The person on the stretcher has been described as a “blonde woman.” She was followed in an SUV driven by someone matching Elin Nordegren’s description. Jesus, let’s hope this isn’t bad. (On a side note: The Orlando Sentinel, despite being updated just moments ago, has a complete fail of correct, up-to-date information. We apologize for using their site for this story.) source
