Culture: Conan’s “Bugatti Veyron Mouse” sketch: A big payout for a big joke

  • This clip cost NBC $1.5 million to produce. It’s the kind of thing Conan can get away with because 1) He’s a genius 2) He doesn’t care about NBC and 3) He’s smarter than the people getting rid of him. NBC’s reaction? They pulled the clip from Hulu and NBC.com. But strangely, it’s on YouTube. We can’t wait for tonight’s show. source

Offbeat: Pranking Christians: Funny because they don’t know pop culture!

  • Two clips, two obvious pop culture references, two guys that completely miss them. In the first clip, the guy reads a letter from a man who has the exact same problem as the Fresh Prince of Bel Air. In the second, the letter-writer says that God is a man who rickrolls. Jesus, you guys need to start watching a wider variety of secular TV. Those are blatantly obvious.

Culture: “Pants on the Ground”: Should “American Idol” ditch age limits?

  • We think we understand why ‘American Idol,’ which dedicates itself to discovering new talent, would impose this restriction. But is the show being unfair to prospective contestants, or even shooting itself in the foot?
  • New York Times culture writer Dave Itzkoff • Suggesting “American Idol” has hurt itself with the age limit restriction. Beyond General Larry Platt, the 63-year-old “Pants on the Ground” supergenius (who has a killer backstory), it’s worth noting that “Britain’s Got Talent” star Susan Boyle has sold WAY more records than any recent “Idol” winner, and she’s 48. Maybe that’s why Simon Cowell is leaving – “The X Factor” doesn’t have an arbitrary age restriction that lends itself to a cookie-cutter effect. source

Culture: Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien both let loose on NBC. AWESOME!!!!


  • Leno trashes In case anyone’s wondering where Leno stands in the wake of this whole situation, here’s your video proof. He’s clearly unhappy about the whole thing. Our respect for him goes up after watching this.

  • Conan’s options Not to be outdone, the pompadoured redhead ripped on NBC even harder than Leno did, with a hilarious list of options the late-night host has after the late-night debacle. Our favorite is the last one. Easily.
