Offbeat: We don’t believe this dude’s shirt for some reason

  • We may not be giving this guy enough credit, but after he and his sons got arrested for getting in a fight with some dude over RELIGION (in that shirt!!!!), something tells us our first instincts are the right ones. source

Culture: “Pants on the Ground”: Should “American Idol” ditch age limits?

  • We think we understand why ‘American Idol,’ which dedicates itself to discovering new talent, would impose this restriction. But is the show being unfair to prospective contestants, or even shooting itself in the foot?
  • New York Times culture writer Dave Itzkoff • Suggesting “American Idol” has hurt itself with the age limit restriction. Beyond General Larry Platt, the 63-year-old “Pants on the Ground” supergenius (who has a killer backstory), it’s worth noting that “Britain’s Got Talent” star Susan Boyle has sold WAY more records than any recent “Idol” winner, and she’s 48. Maybe that’s why Simon Cowell is leaving – “The X Factor” doesn’t have an arbitrary age restriction that lends itself to a cookie-cutter effect. source

Politics: This SNL Sarah Palin sketch is a lot funnier in retrospect, guys

  • This clip somehow got funnier a year and a couple months later, especially in the context of the line from Tina Fey’s version of Sarah Palin: “If I’m not going to the White House I’m either running in four years or I’m going to be a white Oprah.” In the context of the Palin/Fox News announcement today, it’s even more striking. source

Music: We think R. Kelly is a hipster icon. Here’s his latest video.

  • R. Kelly is so over-the-top that you can’t really take him as anything but an ironic icon who’s in on his own joke. He’s so cool that Bonnie “Prince” Billy regularly does covers of his songs. In this song he compares his love prowess to making a hit single. When we become famous R&B singers one day, we’re going to compare our love prowess to running a blog.

Offbeat: Hi honey, I’m in this Facebook ad to tell you HOT SINGLES WANT YOU!

What a hilarious ad. A guy spotted his wife’s mug in a Facebook ad suggesting he go looking for other women. source

  • three “Without putting any pressure, 50% of the cola, right there.”
  • four “It acts like a vacuum; and look at this; virtually dry on the bottom.”
  • five “This lasts ten years, this lasts a week!” source

Tech: This guy’s a regular Walt Mossberg

  • I’m using this OS as I type. Looks like it’s OK to me, not too much different than Vista but a few new items.
