Culture: “Pants on the Ground”: Should “American Idol” ditch age limits?

  • We think we understand why ‘American Idol,’ which dedicates itself to discovering new talent, would impose this restriction. But is the show being unfair to prospective contestants, or even shooting itself in the foot?
  • New York Times culture writer Dave Itzkoff • Suggesting “American Idol” has hurt itself with the age limit restriction. Beyond General Larry Platt, the 63-year-old “Pants on the Ground” supergenius (who has a killer backstory), it’s worth noting that “Britain’s Got Talent” star Susan Boyle has sold WAY more records than any recent “Idol” winner, and she’s 48. Maybe that’s why Simon Cowell is leaving – “The X Factor” doesn’t have an arbitrary age restriction that lends itself to a cookie-cutter effect. source

Culture: See what you did, guys? Now Susan Boyle’s all exhausted.

  • She is getting away from everyone. She’s receiving the best care possible. She needs time to sleep and eat and do the things that she found rather difficult last week.
  • Piers Morgan • A “Britain’s Got Talent” judge and a huge supporter of Susan Boyle, on her need to take a break. The weeks of tabloid pressure due to her status as unexpected superstar singer had finally gotten to Boyle, who apparently cracked and is in the hospital for exhaustion. We’re responsible for making her this big, guys. This is why we can’t have nice things! • source

Culture: Dear U.K. citizens, you have no taste. Sincerely, Susan Boyle fans.

  • Second? WTF guys? Seriously? How? The public voted, and somehow, some way, the lady who seemed like a shoo-in to win “Britain’s Got Talent” fell to second, behind “Diversity,” a dance troupe who isn’t Susan Boyle. We call bull$*#^. By losing, Boyle lost a chance to sing for the Queen of England. It’s kind of terrible we have to say this about an entire country, but: Screw you all. There goes our chance at moving into diplomacy. source

Offbeat, World: This is the best worst quote in the history of ever

  • I’m not saying Susan Boyle caused swine flu. I’m just saying that nobody had swine flu, she sang on TV, people got swine flu.
  • British parliament member Sion Simon • Who said this quote on Twitter, by the way. It’s like three of the biggest news trends came together in a single moment to elicit a laugh from some and horror from others. May we venture to say he regrets saying this? • source

Culture: Simon Cowell to Susan Boyle: Stop getting distracted, lady

  • Get yourself together sweetheart for the big one — the semi-final. Shut the door, choose the right song and come back as who you are, not who you want to be.
  • Simon Cowell • In an interview with reporters in Los Angeles. Cowell said he’s fed up with all the stories on Boyle and wants her to focus on the “Britain’s Got Talent” competition. Boyle’s video is still uber-popular on Youtube, by the way. • source

Culture: Dear depraved porn industry: Leave Susan Boyle alone

  • We want to get this movie shot and out while Susan has the world’s attention. Besides, after 47 years of virginity, I’m sure Susan is also anxious to get something cracking as soon as possible.
  • Kick Ass Films president Mark Kulkis • Who is offering the 47-year-old unlikely British singing YouTube superstar $1 million to lose her virginity in a porn film. The last thing we need is the porn industry ruining a really good, sweet story. • source

Culture: That “Britain’s Got Talent” singer, Susan Boyle, is thinking big

  • Whatever comes my way, I am ready. It would be lovely to sing for the queen. There would be less of the carry on from me, and more of the singing.
  • Susan Boyle • The 47-year-old singer who wowed judges on “Britain’s Got Talent,” on how she hopes to capitalize on her newfound fame. May we suggest makeover? You’re famous now, and you totally deserve it. • source
