Culture, Music: Teddy Pendergrass dies: ’70s R&B icon dead at 59

  • That night I saw the coming of a superstar. When Teddy walked out on the stage, he didn’t even open his mouth and the place went crazy with screaming females. He was just so dynamic and when he started singing, he just blew them away.
  • Producer Leon Huff • Recalling the first stage performance of Teddy Pendergrass, a huge pop star in the ’70s. Beyond his hits – including solo hits “I Don’t Love You Anymore,” “Close the Door,” “Turn off the Lights” and “Love TKO,” along with “If You Don’t Know Me by Now” and “I Miss You” as lead singer of Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes – he was known for having an unfortunate car crash in 1982 which left him paralyzed. Despite this, he continued his music career until 2007. He was one of the greats. Losing him at the same time as Jay Reatard is really sad. source

  • 1985 Whitney Houston made her first album. It was loaded with cheesy, loveable hits. We loved her.
  • 1992 Bobby Brown got married to Whitney Houston. Over time, he ruined her image. Good job, bro.
  • 2002 Crack is wack. This interview turned her into a target of parody. Honestly, it still makes us laugh.
  • 2009 “I Look to You,” Houston’s first album in seven years, comes out. It leaves the crack out of it. source

Music: We think R. Kelly is a hipster icon. Here’s his latest video.

  • R. Kelly is so over-the-top that you can’t really take him as anything but an ironic icon who’s in on his own joke. He’s so cool that Bonnie “Prince” Billy regularly does covers of his songs. In this song he compares his love prowess to making a hit single. When we become famous R&B singers one day, we’re going to compare our love prowess to running a blog.

  • The pedigree on this side project is pretty solid for indie circles – a guy from Vampire Weekend and a guy from Ra Ra Riot. Music: Chris Brown charged with a felony, missed boring Grammys

  • Domestic violence? They’re not naming the victim. R&B superstar Chris Brown, 19, wasn’t at the Grammys last night because of a domestic violence incident. Police are not identifying the victim, who suffered visible injuries, but mentioned it happened early Sunday. Brown was seen with his girlfriend, R&B superstar Rihanna, not long before the Grammys started. Both she and Brown canceled their appearances. source
