World: Profiles in denial: Muammar Gaddafi edition

  • All my people love me. They would die to protect me.
  • Muammar Gaddafi • Speaking to veteran journalist Christiane Amanpour, who sent this quote out on her Twitter account. Big credit to Amanpour, who’s previously obtained surprising access to Gaddafi, and has helped the international community to learn what the besieged in Libya already know so well — the man is insane. source

Offbeat: Belgian dude loves his marbles while in the process of losing them

  • This is like an episode of “The Office.” This Belgian dude, 72, spends his days playing with marbles. He has his own room set aside just for the purpose of playing with marbles. He’s had the obsession since he was 12. Look, we understand obsession. We run a blog. But, come on. This is pathetic.

Offbeat: We don’t know whether to laugh or cry at this video

  • So we just chose to do both. This clip, by the way, is from an episode of A&E’s “Intervention,” so before you crack up too much, keep in mind that these guys really mean what they’re saying. Have you cried much lately? Let one out at this post.

U.S.: The military’s top enemy, after the Taliban? PowerPoint

  • “When we understand that slide, we’ll have won the war.” The military has a problem with PowerPoint presentations taking over their lives, to the point where some top military officers refuse to use the program. If it sounds like an absurdly postmodern problem for a major military force to have, that’s because it is. Our military is becoming a “Dilbert” strip. source

Offbeat: Tactical Nuclear Penguin: Incredibly strong beer landing stateside

  • This beer could make you drunk, fast. That’s because it has an unheard-of 32 percent alcohol by volume, which is six times as strong as your average crap beer. The Scottish beer is so strong that includes this entertaining warning label: “This is an extremely strong beer; it should be enjoyed in small servings and with an air of aristocratic nonchalance. It is exactly the same manner you would enjoy a fine whisky, a Frank Zappa album or a visit from a friendly yet anxious ghost.” Julius has already had a six-pack. Over the span of a month. source

Politics: Erick Erickson: Guy says dumb stuff, then gets job at CNN

  • “I probably shouldn’t have said that.” CNN’s new conservative contributor, Erick Erickson of, has said a lot of crazy crap in his day, and when put on point by Reliable Sources guy Howard Kurtz (also of The Washington Post, and one of our smart people), he kind of falls apart, hilariously. He called David Souter a “goat #(&@(&@ child molester,” which he refers to as the “dumbest thing I’ve ever done.” You know, he might actually be an entertaining part of CNN’s programming.
