Offbeat: These birds know how to rock, if somewhat unintentionally

  • Let’s place a bunch of random birds in a room with a couple of Les Paul guitars, and see what happens. And what happened was avant-garde goodness that some might find just a little amazing. BBC art critic Will Gompertz compares the style of artist Celeste Boursier-Mougenot, who created this, to Marcel Duchamp, in that it adds chance as a factor in the music’s creation. The result? For more than the birds. source

Offbeat: Awesome nerd decides to mix photos and math together

  • Consider it the merging of art and math. Photography and mathematics student Nikki Graziano has been merging her two majors (which she studies at the Rochester Institute of Technology), finding cool images of clouds, shrubs and other things and then graphing how they would repeat in mathematics. Nerd. Arty nerd. source

Offbeat: Protip: If you work at a financial firm, don’t look at porn. Ever.

  • Macquarie Group Australia had a pretty awesome gaffe happen on live TV thanks to one of their bumbling workers, who decided to look at porn while an analyst was getting interviewed for a financial program. Best part of the video is the very end. A classic of the form. The guy responsible could be in huge trouble, by the way. (Duh.) source

Offbeat: Death of an old design: Zappos.com has a funeral for its site

  • More sites need to have funerals for old designs when they retire them, much like Zappos.com (a shoe/clothing company) did when they killed their old-school design. Microsoft should also consider doing something like this for Internet Explorer 6. (hat tip @ohmykevin)

Biz: The Adventures of Newsday Customer No. 36: We’ve been counted!

  • In response to a question, Terry said that we had approximately three dozen subscribers who have signed up to pay $5 per week for access to newsday.com.
  • Cablevision President of Local Media Tad Smith • In a memo regarding Newsday’s plan for subscriptions and Cablevision’s overall media strategy. Tech: Steve Jobs reportedly has a Jobsian fit against Google and Adobe

  • Word on the street is that Steve Jobs had a pretty epic unloading session on both Google and Adobe late last week at Apple headquarters in the wake of the iPad launch, noting how 1.) Google got into the phone business even though Apple didn’t get into the search business, 2.) Google’s “Don’t be Evil” motto is “bull*%*^” or “a load of crap” depending on who you ask, and 3.) Apple doesn’t support Flash on its iPhone and iPad because it’s so buggy, and the company makes no effort to do anything with the technology Apple makes. source

Culture: Straight pimpin’: Stephen Colbert pulls out an iPad at the Grammys

  • How does Stephen Colbert get an iPad before Julius does, anyway? Julius is way more deserving of the Steve plate. But that said, it makes for the best Grammy moment in ages.

Culture: Obama: Good president, better Georgetown play-by-play dude

  • Our president is a total badass, guys. Whether or not you agree with the president’s policies, this is way better than, say, Bill Clinton playing the sax for Arsenio Hall back in the day. It’s like he knows how to let loose and have fun occasionally despite the level of politics going on. And in case you see a dip in the guy’s work output around March or so, he explains why in the video. He watches every single game of March Madness. source
