Culture: “My Generation” may be fake, but its iPad app is pretty real

  • While we admit to being disappointed that the plot to this ABC series isn’t actually a documentary where a bunch of kids were followed and retraced a decade later, we will admit that this is pretty cool. This iPad app can detect audio from the episode and provide cues from within the app. We live in the future, guys. Kinda. source

Tech: 3D printing looks kinda like the wave of the future

Could 3D printing replace manual labor for manufacturing? Well, it’s off to a good start. This architectural model was printed using a 3D printer. source

Tech: Notewire: Because you need to take notes, and paper sucks

  • Need to take some notes? Check out this new tool by friend of the site Jeff Greco. A combination webapp and bookmarklet, it allows you to take notes anywhere and pull them right up on your mobile phone. A neat little trick that might save you some time. source

Culture: Pop quiz: What year was this photo taken? Take a guess.

  • The winner gets a PBR the next time we see them in person. We can afford it. They cost what, 65 cents in Portland? (Hat tip Charles Apple and others) source

Music: Devo’s listening parties: Much more feline than yours

  • We’re sure the “I Can Has Cheezbuger” folks love this. To celebrate the band’s release of its first album in about 20 years (years which have been spent, among other things, in “Rugrats” purgatory), the band had a listening party. In a room full of cats. Seems pretty awesome, right? (Hat tip Laughing Squid) source

Tech: These colorful blocks represent the fastest supercomputers

  • This may be one of the coolest infographics we’ve ever seen. This interactive work splits the relative speed of a bunch of supercomputers up a number of ways – by speed, by OS, by country – and looks awesome. Linux pretty much owns this market, by the way, and IBM and Intel have their fingers in the mix the most, although AMD, HP and Cray hold their own. source

Tech: WHOA: Pulse is officially the coolest iPad news-reader, ever

  • We want to have babies with this RSS reader. OK, maybe not babies, but definitely some sort of spawn. Our statistics meet your cool little boxes in a dark room somewhere, and things might happen. After all, you’re my wonderwall. (Thanks TechCrunch for the tip. This $3.99 pile of awesome, created by a bunch of recent Stanford grads, is totally worth it.) source

U.S.: The dude in this photo has his own personal lobbyist

Rodney Anderson is a cool dude. A mortgage broker, he realized that some of his clients weren’t able to buy homes because of old medical bills. His lobbyist is fixing that. source

Tech: Publish2’s News Exchange: Any publishers need fact boxes, eh? (Eh?)

  • A little secret about us: We’ve grabbed more than a few article ideas for ShortFormBlog from Publish2‘s pretty excellent Link Newswire (and its corresponding WordPress plugin) and have enjoyed seeing what other journalists come up with. And many of the people involved are smart guys whose names we see everywhere on the Web, like Greg Linch and Ryan Sholin.
  • their new thang: “News ExchangeWhile we feel like certain things about Publish2’s system could be slickened up and simplified, they’ve got a pretty great thing already going. And it’s something they’re expanding, big time, with their new “News Exchange,” which expands the basic idea of Publish2 to something where your blood, sweat and tears can end up in print. It’s kinda like the AP, except without the false sense of superiority or the budget for a foreign bureau.
  • we’ll try it. give us a chance.Which leads us to say: We’ll try this out when it opens up to us plebeians. If any newspapers would like to use any of SFB’s content somewhere, let us know. We’d totally be wiling to throw you a bone or two if you throw us a link. We realize we’re a tad opinionated for some of you jerks, but we also think that there might be some pretty cool things you could do with a bunch of numbers. One request: Don’t cut our copy. It’s already short, jerks! source

Offbeat: MacGyver or The Dude? Who’s more awesome? Let’s compare

  • MacGyver, for reals Richard Dean Anderson finds himself in crazy situations which he solves using random everyday objects because he’s MacGyver and he’s awesome or something.

  • The Dude, for reals The Dude, or His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you’re not into the whole brevity thing, is kind of the same thing, except with more stoner and more Lebowski.
