Culture: “Hi, I’m Jon Gosselin. I’m a douchebag and I need work. Pay me.”

  • He wanted more than $30,000 dollars to show up for just a couple hours. The funny part was we didn’t even reach out to him. He called us asking to come. We didn’t pay him.
  • A publicist dealing with Jon Gosselin • Describing the (well, former) “Jon & Kate Plus 8” star’s demeanor when he tried to help at an event. Gosselin, who’s in the midst of a crappy, annoying war of drama with the TLC network over the show that made him (in)famous, needs money to keep up his d-baggy lifestyle. So he’s asking for huge appearance fees right now. • source

Culture: More on that mind-blowing David Letterman story from last night

  • The alleged suspect is … CBS News guy Robert J. Halderman, who works on “48 Hours” and used to live with a woman who worked on Letterman. Halderman, a highly respected newsman who’s been given some major projects in the past, has been suspended from his job. In a statement on the case, CBS said, “Mr. Letterman addressed the issue during the show’s broadcast last night, and we believe his comments speak for themselves.” source

Culture: Dustin Diamond’s “Behind the Bell” has the worst cover design ever

Behind the Bell cover
Do we even need to say why? Just look at this crap. It looks like Dustin Diamond designed it himself. Here's why:

1. Forced pose. Diamond looks like he's trying to be the next David Copperfield, or it's a really bad Zack Morris impression.

2. Stretched, generic font. People who have no clue about design won't notice it. But we do, and it kills us.

3. Ganking from Google Images. Dude, you were on the show. You should have six of those photos on your fridge.

4. Bad use of Photoshop stroking. Congratulations, Dustin. You've created a candidate for the Photoshop Disasters hall of fame. SOURCE

Culture: Jesus Christ, David Letterman. Way to keep us on our toes

  • This morning, I did something I’ve never done in my life. I had to go downtown and testify before a grand jury.
  • David Letterman • Discussing the extortion plot against him on his show tonight. He admitted a couple of big things: He had sex with many of his female staffers, someone tried to extort $2 million dollars out of him, and he went to the authorities rather than go through with it. And you thought Conan O’Brien’s fainting incident was crazy. Larry King is in disbelief even, and he was talking to Jon Gosselin tonight. Somehow, this topped everything that douchebag said. In a way, we’re kind of proud that Letterman was so honest and forthcoming about it. • source

Culture: Jay Leno’s having trouble getting guests from other networks

  • It’s an unexpected consequence of the 10 p.m. block. Jay Leno may have had an easy time getting guests when he was on at 11:35 EST, but at 10, it’s a different story. “Yes, there was a little pressure, because as you know you are now on prime time and I’m on a different network,” said Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who became the first CBS star to show up on Leno’s show Tuesday night. In other news, the reviews aren’t getting more positive. source

Culture: “The Cleveland Show”: Is it racist? Here’s someone arguing that

  • I wonder about the black people who did bother to tune into ‘The Cleveland Show’ debut. Were we so busy laughing that we failed to realize the joke was on us?
  • Jasmyne Cannick • Discussing, in an article on Alternet, why she sees Seth MacFarlane’s “Family Guy” spinoff as a collection of racist, misogynist jokes which really aren’t all that funny. Cannick further argues that with the election of Obama, and the improved image of black people that came along with it, “Fox’s debut of the ‘The Cleveland Show’ is nothing more than a desperate and stealth attempt to work against the improved international image of black people.” Do you agree? • source

Culture: Craigslist’s Missed Connections are an art in their own right

Missed Connections
  • We saw Sophie Blackall somewhere in Brooklyn. (We missed her.) She was sketching a little piece of heaven called “Missed Connections.” It’s one of those brilliant ideas which was begging to be done. In a few years, expect Blackall’s blog to become a Nora Ephron movie.source

Culture: Shed some tears for Dan Rather. He lost his lawsuit against CBS.

  • Remember that faked “60 Minutes” piece? Dan Rather does. Years after the blogosphere proved that his Bush National Guard information was suspect (a great story for typophiles, by the way), he’s been fighting a $70 million lawsuit ever since. An appeals court threw it out, saying that they could find no evidence that the network screwed up his future job prospects or reneged on his contract. All this stuff happened so long ago, we forgot Bush was president! source

Culture: Roman Polanski to Swiss: Will you guys let me go? Please?

  • The director’s hoping for leniency. Roman Polanski submitted an application to a a Swiss court today asking to be let go. He’s willing to have limitations set on his freedom. The court will decide in the next few weeks whether to let him go. Man, if they let him go after all the fuss they made about capturing him … that would be a #)&!storm. source
