Politics: Ron Paul disavows offensive Jon Huntsman-bashing ad

  • “China Jon.” Need we say more? A warning to all that the message in this video is fairly offensive towards Asians, but it’s worth noting that, though the person who released it goes by the YouTube handle “NHLiberty4Paul,” Paul himself is against the ad. For those not watching, the ad makes reference to Huntsman’s adoptive daughters (from China) and shows the presidential candidate speaking in Mandarin Chinese. “I haven’t look at it, but I understand it’s an ugly ad, and I’ve disavowed it,” Paul said. “Obviously, it was way, way out order.” (EDIT: Apologies for the incorrect video at first — our wi-fi crapped out at the exact wrong time.) source

U.S.: Racism may have been at play in Hartford Distributors shooting

  • I killed the five racists that was there bothering me.
  • Omar S. Thornton (reportedly) • In a phone call to his mother immediately after the shooting, but before he turned the gun on himself. Thornton had claimed in the past of being the target of racial harassment at Hartford Distributors, noting racist words or imagery scrawled on bathroom walls. Thornton, who was reportedly a mellow guy, according to his family, and wasn’t known for such outbursts. Police believe he was in the midst of being fired for stealing beer. So this takes another turn. source

Politics: Mindbender: Guy makes racist comix, claims they’re not racist

  • I do not understand the connection with ‘big ears’ and ‘racism’, and I do not understand how a ‘dark face’ implies racism … The accusation of ‘hate’ is true, but it is the hate of an IDEOLGY, not a of race of people …
  • The anonymous author of Tea Party Comix • In an e-mail to underground comix collector Ethan Persoff, regarding his works, which parody Barack Obama in a very offensive way. We’ll let you see them if you really want to (note: racist comix at the link), but beyond the clearly incendiary design of them, they’re subversive in an R. Crumb/early Art Spiegelman way. Which is not to defend them but to note their obvious inspiration. These comix have drawn a lot of attention in the last few days, with the Modern Tea Party claiming they were planted by the Democrats, and everyone else in simple disbelief. Including us. What a terrible idea. source

Politics: Harry Reid says something incredibly racist, apologizes. Idiot.

  • He was wowed by Obama’s oratorical gifts and believed that the country was ready to embrace a black presidential candidate, especially one such as Obama – a ‘light-skinned’ African American ‘with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one,’ as he said privately.
  • Journalists Mark Halperin and John Heilemann • In their new book, “Game Change,” regarding Harry Reid. Reid, of course, is the Senate Majority Leader, and a line like this could hurt his political career. Reid obviously and quickly apologized. “I sincerely apologize for offending any and all Americans,” Reid said, “especially African Americans for my improper comments.” The book itself covers a the 2008 presidential race and how Obama was reportedly pressured to run. Awesome. source

Culture: “The Cleveland Show”: Is it racist? Here’s someone arguing that

  • I wonder about the black people who did bother to tune into ‘The Cleveland Show’ debut. Were we so busy laughing that we failed to realize the joke was on us?
  • Jasmyne Cannick • Discussing, in an article on Alternet, why she sees Seth MacFarlane’s “Family Guy” spinoff as a collection of racist, misogynist jokes which really aren’t all that funny. Cannick further argues that with the election of Obama, and the improved image of black people that came along with it, “Fox’s debut of the ‘The Cleveland Show’ is nothing more than a desperate and stealth attempt to work against the improved international image of black people.” Do you agree? • source

Offbeat: Hey jerk: Tell the large African-American woman how you really feel

A gas station attendant was nice enough to write a mean description on this woman’s receipt. “Big fat black lady?” That’s racist! source
