Tech: Verizon nickels-and-dimes its customers even more

  • We cancel these unintended requests as fast as we can hit the End key, but it doesn’t matter; they’ve told me that ANY data–even one kilobyte–is billed as 1MB. The damage is done.
  • A Verizon customer writing to New York Times tech columnist David Pogue • Discussing how the company has price-gouged them at $1.99 a pop. Hit the wrong button, and it goes to a screen that starts downloading data. When you try downloading that data, Verizon rounds up to a full megabyte and charges you. Pogue is livid about these kind of charges – along with the company’s new $350 penalty for switching providers early. These nickel-and-dime schemes make the company millions of dollars each year. And it isn’t right. • source

Culture: For the kids: Balloon Boy’s parents are gonna plea guilty

  • It is supremely ironic that law enforcement has expressed such grave concern over the welfare of the children, but it was ultimately the threat of taking the children’s mother from the family and deporting her to Japan which fueled this deal.
  • A statement by Richard Heene’s attorney • Describing why the couple behind one of the stupidest hoaxes in recent memory has chosen not to subject the American public to a long, drawn-out trial. Simply put, Mayumi Heene is a Japanese citizen, and if she had not taken the plea, she would’ve been deported. But we will say this much: The sniping in this attorney’s statement? Not necessary, )@!hole attorney. • source

Culture: Roman Polanski, a “high flight risk”? Pssh, whatever!

  • Guess he’s not leaving jail anytime soon. The director who famously skipped out on statutory rape charges by moving to France won’t be able to try a similar trick in Switzerland. The Swiss court has chosen not to allow the director bail due to his long history of, uh, moving to countries where he can’t get extradited. And as you might guess, Polanski is depressed and in an “unsettled state of mind” behind bars. source

U.S.: Balloon Boy’s parents are probably gonna get charged

  • Great news everyone! For wasting everyone’s time, for wasting taxpayer’s money, for making internet memes, for being named Richard Heene, for embarrassing Fort Collins, for showing us Falcon’s vomit, for keeping up amused, and for eating up the news, you’re damn right the parents are gonna get charged. (But not arrested.) source
