Politics: WTF Time Magazine? Shell advertising on oil spill articles

  • Not to criticize Time two weeks in a row, but COME ON. Why are you letting Shell advertise on pages adjacent to stories about the oil spill? The ads are huge, and there’s more than one style of them (keep reloading). Totally not ethical in light of the spill. Look, this whole situation is awful all around – don’t get us wrong – but this kind of schadenfreude advertising isn’t helping anyone. Least of all Shell, who just a few weeks ago was on the hot seat for after an Amnesty International anti-Shell ad was pulled from an issue of the Financial Times. Bad form, Shell. source

Music, Offbeat: Where are they now?: God-awful emo band Attack Attack!

  • Yeah, we know they only came out last year, but that’s a lifetime in the blog world. Remember about a year ago, when we first heard about the crapsterpiece that is Attack Attack!’s “Stick Stickly“? Jesus, it was awful. What’s up their sleeve now? “Sexual Man Chocolate,” which is, we #(!& you not, the name of the first single off of their self-titled second album, out in a little over a week. And yeah, it’s just as bad as “Stick Stickly.” No official video yet, though. We’re guessing they don’t want to screw it up again. Still, though, you have to, uh, respect their stance on their infamy: “Amidst the sensationalist reviews, mainstream news coverage, and viral video crazes, Attack Attack! would like to make one thing clear above all else; they’re definitely having more fun than you are right now.” Keep telling yourself that, guys. source

Politics: Rand Paul is the boot heel that keeps on kicking (oh boy)

  • What I don’t like from the president’s administration is this sort of, ‘I’ll put my boot heel on the throat of BP.’ I think that sounds really un-American in his criticism of business.
  • Rand Paul • Criticizing Obama for their handling of the BP oil spill, you know, one of the worst environmental disasters in the history of the country. Daring to pull out the regulatory dogs is un-American? This comes just days after the Civil Rights Act controversy, and as a result Paul is extending his stay in the Twitter trending topics. Protip: If you win a primary in May, stop talking until September. Will really help your standing. source

World: “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day!” Tomorrow promises bad things

  • 4/23A misguided artist draws a picture parodying the South Park Mohammed thing and sets 5/20 as a date for everyone to draw Mohammed. It gets attention because she sends it to blogs.
  • 4/24 Afraid of the monster she just created, she disowns the picture she personally sent to the blogs and calls it a joke that got out of hand. It doesn’t matter; the idea has already taken hold.
  • 5/19 Pakistan bans Facebook – the entire site – because of the fan page for this thing which has gotten out of hand in a way only things on the internet can. There are videos, too. source

Offbeat: Local news hits the spot when it comes to unfortunate dirty jokes

  • First question: Why were they even covering this particular topic on the local news in the first place? Second question: Is this funnier than “Keep ducking that chicken” or not? (Note: The above clip features kind of “adult” humor. Don’t show it to kids.)

Tech: iPhone-gate: Steve Jobs called Gizmodo personally to get it back

  • Here’s how we imagine the call went: “Hi, this is Steve. You sons of #&((@& better give me my #(&@(&! phone back or I’m going to hit you with a legal thrust so hard you’ll cower the next time you see an Apple product. I hope you die of malaria, Brian Lam. There will be no net that wannabe philanthropist Bill Gates can give you that will protect you from MY wrath. You should see what I did to Eric Schmidt after he released the Nexus One. You’re the scum of the earth. Do what you know you should, #(&(@!(. BYE.” source

Offbeat: Great: The phrase “Buffalo Cougar” has entered the lexicon

  • When he got to us I asked if I could hug him. And when I did I just said, ‘he’s a hottie, with a smokin’ little body’.
  • Luann “Buffalo Cougar” Haley • Regarding her WTF encounter with president Obama yesterday. Haley tried to play it off as a joke that the president was in on, but we all know the truth. She’s the new Monica Lewinsky. Or the new Linda Tripp. We’re still trying to figure that one out. source
