Tech: iPhone-gate: Steve Jobs called Gizmodo personally to get it back

  • Here’s how we imagine the call went: “Hi, this is Steve. You sons of #&((@& better give me my #(&@(&! phone back or I’m going to hit you with a legal thrust so hard you’ll cower the next time you see an Apple product. I hope you die of malaria, Brian Lam. There will be no net that wannabe philanthropist Bill Gates can give you that will protect you from MY wrath. You should see what I did to Eric Schmidt after he released the Nexus One. You’re the scum of the earth. Do what you know you should, #(&(@!(. BYE.” source

Politics: Missing from the White House beer thing: The 911 caller

  • Maybe it’s a guy thing. … She doesn’t like beer anyway.
  • Wendy Murphy • Attorney for Lucia Whalen, the woman who made the phone call that started a chain reaction that started with the arrest of Henry Louis Gates Jr. and will (hopefully) end today at the White House over (crappy domestic) beer. Murphy notes that her client, the only person who didn’t “overreact” in the situation, will be at work. Whalen, who isn’t white but a first-generation Portuguese-American, didn’t get an invite. • source

Tech: Lauren apparently touched a nerve with Apple’s legal department

  • You know why I know they’re working? Because two weeks ago we got a call from the Apple legal department.
  • Microsoft COO Kevin Turner • Regarding their ad campaign that made us fall in love with a bespectacled young woman named Lauren. Lauren said a number of anti-Apple things in her commercial, where she looked for a laptop for under $1,000. Describing the phone call, Turner said, “It was the single greatest phone call in history that I’ve ever taken in business.”  • source

U.S., World: Phone call from US reporter imprisoned in North Korea a “relief”

  • It was a tremendous relief to hear Laura’s voice last night. It was only the first time I have heard her voice in weeks. That silence has been just so terrifying and deafening.
  • Lisa Ling • On hearing from her sister, American TV reporter Laura Ling, who is currently being detained in North Korea. Laura and her colleague Euna Lee were arrested March 17 near the China-North Korea border while researching a story. On June 8 they were sentenced to 12 years of “reform through labour.”  • source
