Culture: Dramatic fight at the U.S. Open, from three different angles

  • From the court Here’s what tennis fans saw if they were watching at home. And yeah, it was epic enough that it actually stopped the match. Bonus points for the use of the word “fisticuffs.” It’s not often that a boxing match breaks out at a tennis match.
  • From a distance Here’s a shot from a little bit away. You can’t make out what the guy is saying here. He never lays a hand on the lady, but still gets hit pretty badly. The dad falls down hard. The young guy is blamed even though he did nothing wrong.
  • From up closeHere’s the real story: The old couple was upset that this dude liked using the F-word, so she yelled at him. Then her dad dramatically decked him. Sorry lady; it’s a public forum. On a side note: Shut up, “Throw the Bum Out” dude. source

Tech: Was this decade the “Search Decade”? Here’s why it might be.

  • Our searches tell the story of the decade. They show sometimes what we need, but always what we want; sometimes who we strive to be, but always who we really are.
  • St. Petersburg Times writer Michael Kruse • Arguing why this decade was the “Search Decade” – which, of the many descriptions we’ve heard this week, probably makes the most sense. We’re a society that searches for everything, not the least of which bigger answers. And Google has become the center of so many of our lives that, really, could it be anything else? source

Offbeat: Great idea, idiots: A mistaken phone number leads to a shooting

  • A guy tried to get a hold of someone via text. He had the wrong number. Honest mistake, right? Whoops. My bad. source
  • The two men started fighting via text, and it got so bad that they met near a CVS, and one shot the other. Idiots. source

U.S.: 150 miles later, these pilots are looking kind of silly

  • They were in a heated discussion over airline policy and they lost situational awareness.
  • The National Transportation Safety Board • Describing how a Northwest Airlines plane managed to fly 150 miles away from the runway it was supposed to land last night. The plane, headed to Minneapolis, was supposed to land at its destination at 8:01 p.m., but instead landed at 9:15 p.m. To be a fly on the wall of that plane after those idiots realized what they did. • source

Politics: Shepard Smith makes a super-passionate public option pitch

  • How does Shep stay on Fox News? Really? He’s like the worst fit for the network, ever. He doesn’t fit in with any of the right-leaning line, and he knows what he’s talking about in this video. He does more to devastate the arguments against a public option (and big insurers in general) in this video than Democrats fighting tooth and nail for it for six months.source

Culture: “The Cleveland Show”: Is it racist? Here’s someone arguing that

  • I wonder about the black people who did bother to tune into ‘The Cleveland Show’ debut. Were we so busy laughing that we failed to realize the joke was on us?
  • Jasmyne Cannick • Discussing, in an article on Alternet, why she sees Seth MacFarlane’s “Family Guy” spinoff as a collection of racist, misogynist jokes which really aren’t all that funny. Cannick further argues that with the election of Obama, and the improved image of black people that came along with it, “Fox’s debut of the ‘The Cleveland Show’ is nothing more than a desperate and stealth attempt to work against the improved international image of black people.” Do you agree? • source

Sports: Aww. Chicago Cubs coach Lou Pinella apologizes to Milton Bradley

  • Pinella says Bradley’s shenanigans need to stop, though. On Friday, Milton Bradley got booted from a game and told to go home after he caused an unnecessary scene. On Saturday, the manager that booted him from the game, Lou Pinella (who’s been called soft lately), backed off a little and apologized, but did expect change from the top-tier Cubs acquisition. “But I also told him that just can’t continue,” Pinella said, “to have shenanigans that we’ve put up with. I told him he’s going to hurt somebody, he’s going to hurt himself.” Bradley and Pinella had a long chat and now they’re cool again. Yay. source

Biz, Politics: A rare argument in favor of letting AIG keep their bonuses

  • Tearing up contracts could set a bad precedent. Obama and large swaths of the government (and large numbers of taxpayers) don’t like having to pay $165 million in bonuses, but it may just be in their best long-term interest to bite the bullet, argues Andrew Ross Sorkin. “If you think this economy is a mess now,” Sorkin argues, “imagine what it would look like if the business community started to worry that the government would start abrogating contracts left and right.” Oh boy. source

Offbeat, U.S.: Las Vegas mayor: Obama owes us an apology

  • That’s outrageous… He owes us a retraction. What’s a better place, as I say, than for them to come here? And to change their mind and to go someplace else and to cancel and at the suggestion of the president of the United States — that’s outrageous.
  • Oscar Goodman • Democratic mayor of Las Vegas, on a recent comment by Barack Obama regarding banks using bailout money to take corporate trips to the city • source
