Offbeat: South Africa giveth and taketh away lottery prizes very quickly

  • Stanley Philander wasn’t the big winner of Saturday’s PowerBall drawing. Whoops. Philander, 52, gladly took the $12 million prize, but another woman really won. He had bought a ticket with the winning numbers after the drawing and went to pick up his prize. Due to the large divide between rich and poor in the country, Philander’s family had to be taken to a secret location for their own protection after winning. We wonder if he’s going to need another secret location after losing. source

Offbeat: Great idea, idiots: A mistaken phone number leads to a shooting

  • accident A guy tried to get a hold of someone via text. He had the wrong number. Honest mistake, right? Whoops. My bad.
  • argument The two men started fighting via text, and it got so bad that they met near a CVS, and one shot the other. Idiots. source

  • It goes from my son, straight to her on the couch. My son’s reaction was, ‘Dad, is that Ms. Defanti?’ …We were up till midnight doing the ‘birds and the bees.’
  • “Joe,” a parent who did not wish to be identified further • Describing the awkward situation he was placed in when a video of classroom memories he and his son were watching switched to a sex tape featuring the teacher. The teacher at Jackson Elementary in Elk Grove, Calif., had a lot of ‘splaining to do, but it was unlikely that she would get fired. • source
