Culture: The saga of Kevin Smith’s wide load and Southwest continues

  • Dude, I know I’m fat. That’s not why I was truly thrown off that plane because I fit perfectly in the seat.
  • Director Kevin Smith • On day three of SouthwestGate, which is proving to be a bit of a boon for Smith, who has a new movie (starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan!) coming out next weekend. Smith has threatened to “scorch the earth” with his complaints. Even though Southwest had the lowest level of customer complaints of all airlines in 2009, Smith is also enough of a PR genius to know how to ride a golden pony like this for days. He survived “Jersey Girl” without too much damage, right? source

U.S., World: Bin Laden audiotape: Plane attacks a communication device

  • The message sent to you with the attempt by the hero Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab is a confirmation of our previous message conveyed by the heroes of September 11. If it was possible to carry our messages to you by words, we wouldn’t have carried them to you by planes.
  • “Osama bin Laden” • In an audio-taped message to President Obama claiming responsibility for the Dec. 25 attempt to blow up a plane in Detroit. While the U.S. can’t confirm it’s the leader, Al Jazeera put it on the air anyway. Bin Laden said that the attacks would continue “as U.S. support for Israel continues.” source

U.S.: Trying to bomb a plane: One of the dumber ways to celebrate Xmas

  • UPDATE: THE passenger was trying to blow up the flight. Today, at the Detroit Metro airport, a flight that was headed from Amsterdam to the saddest metro area in the country ended when one of the passengers tried – and failed – to set off a firecracker-like device on the plane after landing. Fellow passengers stopped the attacker, who was reportedly Nigerian, had Al-Qaeda ties and was on the no-flight list. source

U.S.: 150 miles later, these pilots are looking kind of silly

  • They were in a heated discussion over airline policy and they lost situational awareness.
  • The National Transportation Safety Board • Describing how a Northwest Airlines plane managed to fly 150 miles away from the runway it was supposed to land last night. The plane, headed to Minneapolis, was supposed to land at its destination at 8:01 p.m., but instead landed at 9:15 p.m. To be a fly on the wall of that plane after those idiots realized what they did. • source

U.S., World: It only took 41 years, but the U.S. nabbed a plane hijacker today

  • 1968 the year Luis Armando Peña Soltren and two others hijacked a Pan Am plane and demanded to be flown to Cuba
  • 2009 the year Soltren was caught, years after everyone else (and the airline ceased); he was the longest-wanted fugitive source

World: Why was that plane hijacked in Mexico? Because of the date.

  • 9/9/9 it looks like 6/6/6 upside down source
