Culture: Leslie Nielsen: surely dead too soon (and don’t call me Shirley)

  • If Mel Brooks is the king of parody, Leslie Nielsen was the clown prince, playing it straight even as he was saying the most absurd things and found himself in the most absurd of situations. But Neilsen, who died today at 84, didn’t start out that way – a TV actor at the very dawn of the medium, he was known for his leading man roles until 1980, when a role in the low-budget farce “Airplane!” turned him into a major star and made him a funnyman du jour, something only reinforced by the multiple “Naked Gun” movies (and, oh yeah, the latter part of the “Scary Movie” series, the fifth of which will be his last role). We grew up with this guy. A lot of people did. Protip: If you haven’t seen the short-lived “Police Squad” TV series, you’re missing out.  source

Culture: The saga of Kevin Smith’s wide load and Southwest continues

  • Dude, I know I’m fat. That’s not why I was truly thrown off that plane because I fit perfectly in the seat.
  • Director Kevin Smith • On day three of SouthwestGate, which is proving to be a bit of a boon for Smith, who has a new movie (starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan!) coming out next weekend. Smith has threatened to “scorch the earth” with his complaints. Even though Southwest had the lowest level of customer complaints of all airlines in 2009, Smith is also enough of a PR genius to know how to ride a golden pony like this for days. He survived “Jersey Girl” without too much damage, right? source

U.S.: Bad idea: Crazy guy starts shouting anti-Semitic stuff on a plane

  • obvious In case you haven’t heard, there’s been a lot of activity around airline security lately. Everyone is on their Ps & Qs. Security is on the up.
  • idiotic You’re a random guy, and you start shouting on a plane that you’re Palestinian and you “want to kill all the Jews.” It’s taser time! source

U.S.: Ahahahahaha. The pilots who missed their stop? On their laptops.

  • The pilots are likely gonna lose their jobs. We sure hope so. Last week, the uproar over a plane that disappeared just before it was supposed to land initially had people thinking the plane was hijacked. Then, the pilots were drunk. Then, the pilots were arguing. Here’s what it really was: The pilots were on their laptops, while one was showing the other Delta Air Lines’ new scheduling system – which is changing for the pilots due to the continuing merger of Delta and Northwest Airlines. We’re not sure if we believe this. We bet they were just playing Canabalt. source

U.S.: 150 miles later, these pilots are looking kind of silly

  • They were in a heated discussion over airline policy and they lost situational awareness.
  • The National Transportation Safety Board • Describing how a Northwest Airlines plane managed to fly 150 miles away from the runway it was supposed to land last night. The plane, headed to Minneapolis, was supposed to land at its destination at 8:01 p.m., but instead landed at 9:15 p.m. To be a fly on the wall of that plane after those idiots realized what they did. • source

U.S., World: The three wannabe airline bombers got life sentences

  • “The most grave and wicked conspiracy ever proven within this jurisdiction.” Abdulla Ahmed Ali, Assad Sarwar and Tanvir Hussain, the three men responsible for forcing you to carry your liquids in plastic bags, have each been sentenced to life in prison for their attempted 2006 trans-Atlantic airline attack. The three were convicted of a murder plot in the U.K., though they claim it was for a political statement. Each must serve at least 32 years before being eligible for parole, with Ahmed Ali having to serve at least 40. source

U.S.: Phrase you don’t want to hear when flying: Football-sized hole

  • The cabin depressurized, but everyone’s OK. A Southwest Airlines plane headed from Nashville to Baltimore had to make an emergency landing in Charleston, West Virginia yesterday after a giant hole opened up above the cabin 34,000 feet in the air, causing the plane’s oxygen masks to come down. Despite how !#(&@*& scary that sounds, nobody was hurt. Whew. source
