World: Australian teen with bomb strapped to her neck freed (whew)

  • We don’t know what to make of a story this weird. After a 10-hour ordeal involving a bomb and an apparent extortion attempt, an 18-year-old Sydney girl has been freed (the clip reflects the situation before she was freed). “She’s good – she’s been kept in a very uncomfortable position,” New South Wales state Police Assistant Commissioner Mark Murdoch  said. “She has been and will be uncomfortable for a little while to come.” Murdoch says that the device was no joke — it was “very elaborate, very sophisticated.” Right now, officials are trying to learn the identity of the weirdo who did this to her. source

World: Shrapnel bomb rocks Jerusalem bus stop this morning

  • four years since a bomb was last set off in Jerusalem
  • 24 people injured, as the bomb shot out shrapnel
  • one person killed in the incident, an Israeli source
  • » The old tension beginning to boil again: This bomb attack comes on the heels of rocket and mortar attacks launched from Gaza on Wednesday, which wounded one person. That attack was called retaliation by some Palestinians, in response to Israeli air strikes that killed eight people, amongst them three children. So, basically, this is all (still) shot to hell, and with Israeli/Palestinian peace talks having fallen apart last year, it’s anybody’s guess what the future holds for this most bloody and depressing of conflicts.

  • 48+ people killed by bombs targeting Shi’ites, police source
  • » A horribly bloody week in Iraq Following a particularly devastating attack on police recruits in Tekrit, the sectarian bombings and targeting of Shi’ites and Iraqi forces continue. There’s not much that can be said to add significance to this. It’s the definition of terrorism, cold and stark.

U.S.: Times Square suspect had radical tendencies as far back as 2006

  • Can you tell me a way to save the oppressed? And a way to fight back when rockets are fired at us and Muslim blood flows? In Palestine, Afghan, Iraq, Chechnya and elsewhere.
  • Times Square bombing suspect Faisal Shahzad • In a couple of e-mails that CNN acquired. The first e-mail, from 2006, suggests that he had radical tendencies long before he plotted his failed attack. He was frustrated with the way the West treated the Muslim world and as a result was looking for a way to fight back. In 2009, his radicalism was more pronounced. “If you don’t have the right teacher, then Satan should become your sheikh,” he wrote then. A bank soon foreclosed on his home. source

U.S.: Times Square suspect Faisal Shahzad judged for crappy planning

  • Experts say it wasn’t a well-put-together bomb. Among other things, they say the device used alarm clocks from the ’60s rather than modern remote detonation devices, and relied on the clocks to set off fireworks that would cause a much larger blast. Essentially, they’re noting that the device seemed like it was ACME-quality. Ouch. Poor Faisal. He was just suspected of blowing up Times Square. source

U.S.: NYC mayor Bloomberg: Don’t assume it’s al-Qaeda or Taliban yet

  • There are hundreds of videos we haven’t seen all of them. We’ll look at each one many times, with experts… So far there’s no legitimate evidence that al-Qaeda or the Taliban or anyone else had anything to do with this – no matter what the Taliban says.
  • New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg • On whether the evidence suggests that terrorist groups had anything to do with the attempted Times Square attack. Yesterday, the Pakistani Taliban took credit for the car bomb, but Bloomberg is clear that it’s still early and that there’s no evidence that even the “person of interest” is the one responsible for the attempted bombing of Times Square. source
