Culture: New developments in Jerry Sandusky child sex assault case

  • Alleged Sandusky victim will testifyBen Andreozzi, the defense attorney for one of Jerry Sandusky’s eight alleged victims, has stated that his client intends to testify to being “severely sexually assaulted.” Andreozzi says Sandusky’s recent TV interview hardened his client’s resolve: “He is feeling more comfortable about going through with this. The comments maybe backfired.”
  • Police contradict McQueary’s Email A recently released email sent by former Penn State assistant Mike McQueary claimed he had contacted the police after believing he’d witnessed Sandusky sodomizing a young boy in the Penn State locker room showers. He did not specify which department he meant, but both campus and local police departments have denied receiving any such report. source

World: Protests continue in Greece after austerity plan passes

  • Tumult, violence in Greece: Passions continue to run hot in Greece after the party-line vote in favor of a harsh new set of austerity measures — the new tax burden placed on minimum wage earners, in particular, has inflamed swaths of the public against the plan. Protests had been increasingly violent leading up to the vote, and have sustained after the plan’s passage — police have responded with teargas attacks on the protesting crowds. As always, we hope people find a way to keep themselves safe in all this. source

In 2007, police found a hidden semi-automatic handgun in his car following a traffic stop, which landed him the charge. Incidentally, the line “Pain is love” is the title of one of his albums, with “Pain is Love 2” slated for release this summer — and that, friends, is commitment to marketing. U.S.: Chaotic protests, dischord in Madison, Wisconsin reaching fever pitch

  • Chaos at the capitol: As a means to reduce the amount of protests and (legitimately worrisome) rage in Madison, the state GOP’s sudden vote last night hasn’t been too helpful. source

U.S.: Ohio Gov. John Kasich would like you to know he can crush unions too

  • Wisconsin As anybody with an even mild interest in politics now knows, Gov. Scott Walker’s “budget” bill is not about the budget, so much as it’s a duplicitous effort to crush public unions at seemingly any political price. Police and firefighters, being somewhat harder to scapegoat than teachers, are exempt.
  • Ohio Don’t look now, but Gov. John Kasich is the mega-Walker. The newly elected Republican (and former Bill O’Reilly fill-in host) has an even more draconian hope for unions, stripping broad bargaining rights (like health care), and even disallowing strikes. Oh, and no free pass for police or firefighters. source

U.S.: A bad day for the Baltimore Police Department

  • Baltimore cops busted for kickbacks: Reports have come out that the Baltimore Police Department is charging seventeen officers, as well as a pair of brother auto mechanics, with running an extortion scheme through a towing company. Basically, the cops took bribes from the mechanics, proprietors of Rosedale’s Majestic Auto Repair shop, to steer accident tows and repair to their business instead of a city-authorized one. This scheme lasted two years, and now stands to cost those involved a maximum of twenty years in prison. source

World: Saif Gaddafi’s “rivers of blood” continue to flow in Libya

  • YES Libyan military aircraft fired live munitions at crowds source
  • » So says Al Jazeera. While it’s rightly noted that there hasn’t been independent verification of this, with public relations work by “rivers of blood” Saif Gaddafi, the Libyan government hasn’t left us much recourse but to believe they’re making good on that gruesome threat. Julien Barnes-Dacey, Middle East analyst for Control Risks: “These really seem to be last, desperate acts. If you’re bombing your own capital, it’s really hard to see how you can survive.”
