Politics: “A failure of basic coal mine safety procedures” at Upper Big Branch

  • I don’t know how you could have assembled a worse record than the record they have assembled in the last few years. It does not appear the culture has changed at Massey. That is most unfortunate.
  • Davitt McAteer, chair of the West Virginia Governor’s Independent Investigation Panel • Speaking on his examination and report about the deadly explosion at the Upper Big Branch coal mine, under the ownership of Massey Energy.  The full report, available here, is pretty damning — the subtitle of the report is, simply, “a failure of basic coal mine safety practices.” Said Senator Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia: “This report tragically reinforces that the disaster that took the lives of 29 men at Upper Big Branch last year was absolutely preventable. That will always be one of the most painful facts about this explosion.” source

World: Muammar Gaddafi blames (surprise!) foreigners for uprising

  • Muammar Gaddafi, still horrible: Included in this already striking video showing Libyan rebels firing on a state war plane overhead, Muammar Gaddafi held a press conference of sorts in which he again claimed there isn’t a domestic uprising against him. He said that small groups of dissidents have entered Libya from Afghanistan, Algeria, Egypt and Palestine, but rest assured, Libyans are still with him. It’d be amusing, if he weren’t brutally killing his own people. source

World: Iran hit by large terror attack, still manages to blame U.S.

  • what A back-to-back series of suicide bombings, claimed by the Jundallah militant group, killed at least 27 people and injured at least 270.
  • who? For some reason, Iran is trying to blame the attacks on the U.S. and U.K., saying they funded the terror group. source

Tech: Apple’s stance on the antenna thing: The signal bars are a lie!

  • We have discovered the cause of this dramatic drop in bars, and it is both simple and surprising. Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong.
  • A press release from Apple • Explaining what they think is causing the real problem with the iPhone’s reception (kinda). It’s not the reception itself that’s bad, they say, but the way it was presented. Engadget explained a little of what was happening yesterday. Basically, the levels at which it displays five bars are much higher than where it displays four bars, but everything else is at a fairly similar level. We’re guessing this doesn’t explain everything, and it’s not going to completely placate iPhone users. Give them all bumpers! source

U.S.: So, Obama’s taking responsibility in his State of the Union tonight

  • But he won’t take blame. Obama’s first year in office hasn’t been perfect, and now the administration’s running with its tail between its legs, trying to figure out the best way to reconcile after the Scott Brown loss. Expect an Obama who takes “responsibility” for the missteps tonight, but not one who shoulders the blame. Should be fun to watch. We’ll be there, blogging about it. source

Biz, Tech: AT&T: Don’t blame us for Google Voice. Blame Apple.

  • AT&T does not manage or approve applications for the App Store. We have received the letter and will, of course, respond to it.
  • AT&T • In a statement to Mashable regarding the controversy circling the Google Voice iPhone app. While AT&T themselves may not have forced the hand of Apple, agreements put in place may have directly influenced it.  • source

World: Again … Iran totally wants to shift the blame onto the U.S.

  • It has to be asked whether the actions of (Mousavi and his supporters) are in response to instructions of American authorities.
  • Hossein Shariatmadari • An adviser to Iran’s supreme leader and the leader of a powerful newspaper group in Iran. That’s right, this jerk is claiming that the U.S. had a direct role in the rise of the opposition. No, idiot. The opposition had a direct role. They were the only ones. The spin cycle isn’t working; they really want to hang you guys out to dry. • source

U.S.: D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty: Blame us for the Metro crash

  • We do have an independent train system… [but] let’s not try and disperse the blame. Let’s put it on the decision makers and the leaders.
  • Adrian Fenty • Speaking this morning on “Good Morning America,” taking blame for Monday’s D.C. Metro crash, which killed nine people. The cause of the crash appears to be faulty, outdated equipment which wasn’t replaced when recommended, as the train driver (who was also killed) did press the emergency brake and there were were automatic mechanisms in place that should have prevented the crash. The fact that Fenty is so willing to put his neck out is bold. • source

World: Blame the media? That’s what Iran is doing right now.

Feeling that the Western media’s influence has turned the public against them, Iran is looking to slow the flow of information. source

U.S., World: Secretary of State Clinton: Blame us for Mexico’s drug violence

  • Our insatiable demand for illegal drugs fuels the drug trade. Our inability to prevent weapons from being illegally smuggled across the border to arm these criminals causes the deaths of police officers, soldiers and civilians.
  • Secretary of State Hilary Clinton • Who admitted that the U.S. played a role in creating the volatile Mexican drug trade. By admitting the U.S. was largely to blame for the violence by both its usage and its weapons, she went much further than many other government officials have in the past. • source
