World: Syria: Hillary Clinton says Russia was unwilling to budge on UN resolution

“I thought that there might be some ways to bridge, even at this last moment, a few of the concerns that the Russians had,” she told the Munich Security Conference. “I offered to work in a constructive manner to do so. That has not been possible.” source

World: Hillary Clinton, Vladimir Putin have war of words over Russian elections

  • She set the tone for some actors in our country and gave them a signal. They heard the signal, and with the support of the U.S. State Department, began active work.
  • Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin • Claiming that U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton instigated violent protests in his country by claiming there was evidence of electoral fraud. “The first thing that the secretary of state did was say that they were not honest and not fair,” Putin claimed, “but she had not even yet received the material from the observers.” Clinton responded to Putin’s comments by reiterating her own. source

World: Hillary Clinton: Transitioning to democracy can be risky

  • There are risks with the transition to democracy. (The) transition can backslide into just another authoritarian regime. Revolutions have overthrown dictators in the name of democracy, only to see the political process hijacked by new autocrats who use violence, deception, and rigged elections to stay in power, or to advance an agenda of extremism.
  • Secretary of State Hillary Clinton • Regarding the pitfalls that Middle Eastern countries could face as they fight for democracy. This is true, yes, but is she saying it to convince others to be careful, or to dissuade less-committed democracy fighters in the region? source

U.S., World: Hillary Clinton toughens her words on Egyptian situation

  • yeah … U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is calling for Egypt to have an “orderly, peaceful transition” to a “real democracy,” which is much further than the Obama administration has gone so far during the crisis. Hopefully, they’ll go much further.
  • … but Clinton later dodged the military aid question: “We always are looking and reviewing our aid but right now we are trying to convey a message that is very clear, that we want to ensure there is no violence and no provocation that result in violence.” source

World: The U.S. decides to let Israeli settlement deal fall through

  • That sound you hear is that of the U.S. dragging its tail between its legs. After attempting to making an offer to Israel to give them some fighter jets in exchange for a temporary delay of their building ambitions, the deal fell apart. The hope was that the delay would encourage Israel and Palestine to create firm borders, but in the end, the U.S. wouldn’t offer anything up to Israel in writing, and Palestine wouldn’t rekindle peace talks over a temporary settlement-building halt. The U.S. is playing down the diplomatic failure (which was kind of a bum deal anyway) and instead moving on to diplomatic talks between Israel and Palestine next week in the U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, by the way, will be making a speech about the Middle East on Friday. source

Politics: Hillary Clinton: Are you mad? I’m not running for president again

  • I think I’ll serve as secretary of state as my last public position and the probably go back to advocacy work, particularly on behalf of women and children.
  • Secretary of State Hillary Clinton • Suggesting that, no, she won’t run for president when Obama’s done. She’s hinted at the issue before but the comments today were the first very explicit ones she’s made about her future plans. We don’t believe her. If she waited a few more years, she would most likely be president. Knowing her past ambitions, it’s hard to believe she’d give them up like that. source

Politics: Bob Woodward’s Obama/Clinton 2012 talk perks up some ears

  • Perhaps they should’ve done this back in 2008. Nothing against Biden – he’s not a bad VP even with his occasional gaffes – but it might have made it easier on the White House. See, if Hillary were VP, it’d be much harder for critics to pin all of the country’s weaknesses on Obama. Hillary Clinton should also run in 2016 no matter what happens, because she’ll probably win. Even with the frustrations some have with the Obama administration, one person who’s come out ahead is Clinton. She still looks good. source
