Politics: Protip: If you’re Hillary Clinton, don’t discuss lawsuits in Ecuador

  • President Obama has spoken out against the law because he thinks that the federal government should be determining immigration policy. And the Justice Department, under his direction, will be bringing a lawsuit against the act.
  • Secretary of State Hillary Clinton • During a television interview in Ecuador where she was all like, hey, we’re going to sue Arizona because of this crazy immigration law. For what it’s worth, the Justice Department is still looking through evidence. Still, though, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer is PISSED. “To learn of this lawsuit through an Ecuadorean interview with the Secretary of State is just outrageous,” she said. source

Politics: Hillary Clinton brilliantly flips national debt issue on its head

  • We cannot sustain this level of deficit financing and debt without losing our influence, without being constrained in the tough decisions we have to make … [it’s time to] make the national security case about reducing the deficit and getting the debt under control.
  • Secretary of State Hillary Clinton • Making an argument that the national debt could be handled better with a smaller U.S. military presence around the world. Her argument? The high level of national debt and deficit could be even more dangerous than having a weak military. Clinton is suggesting we work with other emerging countries to help lift the military burden off of the U.S. Will this work? Good question. source

U.S., World: Hillary Clinton has a prediction on what happens to Iran next

  • That is how we see it. We see that the government in Iran, the supreme leader, the president, the Parliament, is being supplanted and that Iran is moving towards a military dictatorship.
  • Secretary of State Hillary Clinton • Speaking at a televised town hall meeting at Carnegie Mellon University. She’s literally suggesting that the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps could take power away from Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and company based on the intelligence they have. She also notes that UN sanctions would focus on the guards, which control Iran’s nuclear program. Interesting take. source

U.S., World: Hillary’s not getting involved in the Haiti missionaries case

  • It would be highly unusual for the secretary of state to intervene in a case involving the judicial process of another country.
  • State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley • Regarding the case of the 10 missionaries detained in Haiti for attempting to take children out of the country. This is despite much public pressure for both the State Department and the Haitian government to let the detained go. “This is all the result of a colossal misunderstanding and we are hoping it will resolve itself,” said lawyer Reginald Brown, who is representing one of the missionaries. He wrote a letter asking Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to help. source

Politics: Henry Kissinger still alive, still pushing for strong Iraq policy

  • Yet while Iraq is being exorcised from our debate, its reality is bound to obtrude on our consciousness. The U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq will not alter the geostrategic importance of the country even as it alters that context.
  • Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger • Regarding the need to continue focusing on Iraq policy even while we’re withdrawing. He notes that Obama barely touched on it in his State of the Union address. Due to its strategic significance and its everlasting ties to terrorism, Kissinger claims “It cannot be in the American interest to leave the region as a vacuum.” He’s like the dude claiming we should spend the day after the party doing a deep clean of the apartment, despite the fact that it’s someone else’s job. source

U.S., World: Hillary Clinton lays down the gauntlet against cyberattacks

  • Countries or individuals that engage in cyber attacks should face consequences and international condemnation. In an interconnected world, an attack on one nation’s networks can be an attack on all.
  • Secretary of State Hillary Clinton • In a speech she plans to give this morning on China’s reported hacking of companies like Google. Clinton reportedly also will bring up concerns specifically about the Google attack. China, for its part, says the attack shouldn’t be overstated. source
