Politics: P.J. Crowley’s exit: Obama looks REALLY REALLY bad right now

  • What exactly goes on in Obama’s mind? He’s a smart and supposedly idealistic guy who came of age during the Reagan years, who surely — those first times he dared to dream about the Oval Office — saw himself taking all the obvious hypocrisy. Instead, he is taking presidential hypocrisy to new levels. What switch got turned off, or on, that stops him from ordering a halt to the mistreatment of Bradley Manning?
  • Philadelphia Daily News columnist Will Bunch • Offering a very harsh and sobering viewpoint on the whole Obama/P.J. Crowley/Bradley Manning thing we posted about yesterday. This is what Obama’s going to have to deal with from the left now that his administration forced Crowley out. See, Obama banked his career on being not that guy. And you know what? He’s kinda acting like that guy now. Who twisted his arm so tightly that he no longer seems to be actively pushing that human rights thing he used to push? source

Politics: P.J. Crowley: Gaddafi just “forfeited his right to lead Libya”

  • Based on what he has done in turning his weapons against his people, rather than engaging them, we believe that he has forfeited his right to lead Libya.
  • State Department Spokesman P.J. Crowley • Speaking from the American view of what Muammar Gaddafi should do next in Libya. Nothing against the U.S. sentiments, but we’re pretty sure that this isn’t how it works. Running a country isn’t like letting a coupon expire. It isn’t like not showing up for a basketball game with five players, either. More goes into it than that. Power has to be negotiated or wrestled away. source

U.S.: Wikileaks: Wow, there’s a lot of espionage in these cables

  • Is it a natural part of diplomatic activity to have diplomats collecting biometric data? … [It’s] a contravention of how diplomats are supposed to conduct business.
  • Wikileaks spokesperson Kristinn Hrafnsson • Expressing the organization’s level of surprise at the extent of the espionage they found. The State Department claimed that its diplomats were in fact not spying.  “Contrary to some Wikileaks’ reporting,” wrote State Department spokesperson P.J. Crowley, “our diplomats are diplomats. They are not intelligence assets.” source

U.S., World: Hillary’s not getting involved in the Haiti missionaries case

  • It would be highly unusual for the secretary of state to intervene in a case involving the judicial process of another country.
  • State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley • Regarding the case of the 10 missionaries detained in Haiti for attempting to take children out of the country. This is despite much public pressure for both the State Department and the Haitian government to let the detained go. “This is all the result of a colossal misunderstanding and we are hoping it will resolve itself,” said lawyer Reginald Brown, who is representing one of the missionaries. He wrote a letter asking Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to help. source
