U.S., World: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sez North Korea has “no friends”

  • There is no place to go for North Korea, they have no friends left that will protect them from the international community’s efforts to move toward denuclearization.
  • Secretary of State Hillary Clinton • In her latest push to get North Korea to denuclearize. As we’re sure you all know, Korea’s off-kilter half has been described as “provocative” in the last few months, and not the kind of “provocative” that Madonna was when she made that book with all the naked photos. And North Korea responded “provocatively” to Clinton, saying she “is by no means intelligent.” Now, if this were a schoolyard fight – and not saying it is – this would be the point we’d expect Clinton, fresh off her elbow injury, to take off her pantsuit jacket and start beating the bloody snot out of the jerk in North Korea who said that. But she wouldn’t do that. Know why? She’s a diplomat. • source

U.S.: Hilary sez she’s still doing her job OK even with a ganked elbow

  • Her words: “I broke my elbow, not my larynx.” Secretary of State Hilary Clinton has been out of the spotlight for a few weeks because of a broken elbow, but she still has a full role in the Obama administration, trashing on critics who say otherwise. Her only problem? The vetting process is so tough that administration officials are still not in their positions six months after the inauguration – they want to guarantee clean politics, apparently. source

U.S., World: Hilary Clinton: Don’t read into the North Korea jailed journo case

  • We hope that the North Koreans will grant clemency and deport them. There are other concerns that we and the international community have with North Korea, but those are separate and apart from what’s happening to the two women.
  • Secretary of State Hilary Clinton • Discussing the fates of jailed Current TV journalists Euna Lee and Laura Ling while being very careful not to tie their situation to that of the current nuclear crisis complicating diplomacy between North Korea and the rest of the world. Nice job separating the two, but we have to imagine people have already made up their minds on this one. • source

U.S.: Diplomats will get benefits for their same-sex partners

  • The department will provide these benefits for both opposite-sex and same-sex partners because it is the right thing to do.
  • Secretary of State Hilary Clinton • In a memo to her State Department staff on giving equal rights to diplomats with same-sex partners. A senior State Department official confirmed the note but not the timeframe. Either way, Clinton did a nice thing. • source

U.S., World: Hilary Clinton tries to look at the bright side of the Iraq attacks

  • I think the suicide bombings … are, in an unfortunately tragic way, a signal that the rejectionists fear that Iraq is going in the right direction.
  • Secretary of State Hilary Clinton • On her reasoning for the sudden rise in attacks in Iraq late this week. We’re not sure if this is a good thing. • source

U.S., World: Secretary of State Clinton: Blame us for Mexico’s drug violence

  • Our insatiable demand for illegal drugs fuels the drug trade. Our inability to prevent weapons from being illegally smuggled across the border to arm these criminals causes the deaths of police officers, soldiers and civilians.
  • Secretary of State Hilary Clinton • Who admitted that the U.S. played a role in creating the volatile Mexican drug trade. By admitting the U.S. was largely to blame for the violence by both its usage and its weapons, she went much further than many other government officials have in the past. • source

U.S., World: Hilary Clinton takes a break from diplomacy to hit a talk show

  • Secretary of State Hilary Clinton • Who took a break from saving the world to talk on a Turkish talk show about her husband, her fashion sense, and carefully avoid talking about the Monica Lewinsky scandal, which is what she did here. • source

U.S., World: The Hilary Clinton quote that set off a ton of human rights activists

  • But our pressing on those issues can’t interfere on the global economic crisis, the global climate change crisis and the security crisis.
  • Secretary of State Hilary Clinton • talking about China and their human rights record, and how they fit in with U.S. economic interests. As you might guess, activists aren’t happy about this policy stance, especially when it comes to Tibet. • source
