Tech: Want an unlocked iPhone? Good news. They sell them now.

  • $649 for the right to buy your iPhone 4 unlocked source
  • » Two caveats, though: Before you get too excited about the idea of buying an ultra-expensive iPhone contract-free and untied to a single carrier, two things you should be aware of: First, it only works on GSM networks, so no Sprint or Verizon. And second, while T-Mobile is a GSM network, it doesn’t support the iPhone’s style of 3G, so you’re stuck with last-generation EDGE speeds. But it can be a boon if you’re an international traveler, as GSM networks are the most-common style worldwide.

Tech: Do Apple’s iPhone 4 design flaws extend to the glass?

  • So yeah, another iPhone mini-crisis: So, these cases are designed to protect your iPhone from the elements, but they may actually have the opposite effect. Why? Well, if through normal use, something gets under the case, as has been known to happen, it could cause scratches to the case. Bad enough, but factor in the iPhone 4’s glass back, and you have possible breakage. They reportedly had to take a bunch of cases out of the Apple Store as a preemptive measure. Jesus, can Apple get a break here? source

Tech: JailbreakMe makes it possible to jailbreak your iPhone by accident

  • So, we bet you want to jailbreak your iPhone 4. Well, JailbreakMe has you covered. Using your iPhone, go to this here site. (If that site’s not working, check out this one. Oh, and read more here.) If you’re not using an iPhone, it won’t do anything, but on your iPhone, it’ll jailbreak it – using the cloud. This. Is. A. Big. Deal. Apple can’t be happy about this. This makes “stupidly easy” seem like a major understatement. (Warning, though: There are some issues with FaceTime and MMS for you iPhone 4 kiddies, so be careful. Oh, and trust us when we say DON’T DO THIS UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU’RE DOING!) source

Tech: Apple: White iPhones somehow harder to make than black ones

  • White models of Apple’s new iPhone® 4 have continued to be more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected, and as a result they will not be available until later this year. The availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected.
  • A PR statement from Apple • Noting the technical limitations caused by in creating the white iPhone 4. Apple is certainly running into a lot of problems with the phone this time around, aren’t they? Considering how smoothly most of their other launches go, it’s almost absurd. source

Tech: Steve Jobs on iPhone 4’s antenna issues: Rawr! ME ANGRY

  • It’s been blown out of proportion. I know it’s fun to have a story, but it’s less fun when you’re on the other side.
  • Steve Jobs • Discussing the whole “Antennagate” issue, which he emphasized was common to other phones besides the iPhone 4. That said, dude’s offering free cases (not just “bumper” cases, because they can’t make them fast enough) – and refunds for people who bought bumper cases – through September 30th. (Which they’ll reexamine when the time comes.) And if that’s not enough for people, they can get refunds, including being let out of their contracts. Sounds like a pretty good solution, although Jobs definitely had his teeth out today. source

Tech: Is Apple finally ready to come clean about their antenna problems?

  • They have a press conference scheduled for Friday. However, while it will be about the iPhone 4, there’s no word on whether or not it’s actually about the antenna issue, which Consumer Reports went out of their way to turn into a full-fledged PR crisis the other day. On the scale of smart public relations moves, it certainly beats Steve Jobs telling a customer, “You’re holding it the wrong way.” Unless they plan to stonewall some more. source
