Tech: High-fives all around for the makers of Opera Mini for the iPhone

  • Hell froze over, boys. Our good friends at Opera, who ballsily submitted a Web browser (i.e. direct competition) to the good folks at Apple for the iPhone App Store, actually got it approved. Which was beyond unexpected based on Apple’s recent track record. Maybe Apple isn’t made of stone after all. Will a mobile version of Firefox be next? source

Tech: Opera decides to have fun with their iPhone app’s uncertain state

  • Opera Mini for iPhone submitted today. When do you think Apple will approve it?
  • Opera’s official Twitter account, @opera • Regarding their playing with fire and submitting their Opera iPhone app, which would directly compete with Mobile Safari to some degree (though they’ve been careful to note the differences in speed and approach). Opera is being downright clever about this, creating a contest where people suggest when the app will be approved by Apple, and giving away an iPhone to the winner. Clever bastards. Might as well have fun with uncertainty. source

Tech: Amazon’s new Kindle app store a bum deal for developers?

  • 15¢ the cost per megabyte Amazon wants developers to pay for its Kindle app store
  • 70% the share of the pie developers take home after the 15-cent-per-meg charge
  • 30% the share Amazon takes; this is a less favorable deal than Apple’s App store, BTW
  • Why the 15-cent charge? Simple: Users don’t pay for the wireless connection. Amazon does. It’s a cost-recouping measure which has the effect of making the store less desirable for developers. No free apps to be found here, guys. source

Offbeat: Dumb idea: A Chrismas card with an iPhone – and app! – inside

  • Whoever gives a Christmas card like this for a friend or family member needs to consider exactly how high they’re setting the standards for Chrismas now and Christmases to come. Not only is the card super-expensive, but the app they’re using isn’t even free.

Tech: Not news: Apple does something stupid with the iPhone app store

politics1109a
  • Are these caricatures offensive? Apple seems to think so. And poor Tom Richmond’s got hundreds of hours worth of hard work wasted thanks to the decision. Richmond, an illustrator, helped design a political app called “Bobble Rep” which shows every member of congress (even poor non-vote-getting Eleanor Holmes Norton!), or 540 (!) in total. And Apple rejected the app because they said Richmond’s drawings could “be considered obscene, pornographic, or defamatory.” And politics isn’t even the issue – the app is non-partisan. Worst decision Apple’s ever made? Maybe.source
