Tech: Not news: Apple does something stupid with the iPhone app store

politics1109a
  • Are these caricatures offensive? Apple seems to think so. And poor Tom Richmond’s got hundreds of hours worth of hard work wasted thanks to the decision. Richmond, an illustrator, helped design a political app called “Bobble Rep” which shows every member of congress (even poor non-vote-getting Eleanor Holmes Norton!), or 540 (!) in total. And Apple rejected the app because they said Richmond’s drawings could “be considered obscene, pornographic, or defamatory.” And politics isn’t even the issue – the app is non-partisan. Worst decision Apple’s ever made? Maybe. source

Sports: The NBA’s ready to use scab referees for the upcoming season

  • They couldn’t reach a deal with the ref’s union. Earlier this week, talks between the league and the National Basketball Referees Association broke down. Now, the NBA’s on its way to using replacements in its ref training camp. The NBRA was ready for it. “I predicted that a lockout was forthcoming and yet it does not mean that both sides cannot continue to talk and work through some of these issues,” said lead negotiator Lamell McMorris. source

Tech: The saga of the Google Voice iPhone app gets more drama-laden

  • Google says Google admitted yesterday that Apple was not still looking into the Google Voice application, but that it was rejected for duplicating functionality.
  • Apple says For Apple’s part in the mix, they say that they’re telling the truth. If they weren’t, it would effectively mean they were lying to the FCC. That’s bad.
  • TechCrunch butts inTechCrunch says that Google has a screenshot of the actual rejection letter. It’s offering a T-shirt to the Google employee that sends it along. Classy. source

Tech: Are Apple’s random App Store rules hurting the iPhone?

  • It’s one thing to delay a homebrew project like mine, but it’s another thing to shut down a team of developers burning real cash. Apple should be worried when real programmers shrug off the rejections by saying, ‘It’s just a hobby.’
  • Infoworld columnist Peter Wayner • Describing the hoops he’s had to go through – along with the months of waiting – just to get an iPhone app version of his book onto the App Store. He’s still trying to get a pay version on – with proceeds that go to charity – after four months. • source

Music, Tech: Trent Reznor’s NIN app got rejected. The reason? His music.

  • “The Downward Spiral” was cited as the specific reason for rejection. The latest version of Trent Reznor’s iPhone app, “NIN Access,” was blocked from the App Store for its content. Which is strange because the content is largely the same as the original version of the app. When Reznor heard the reason, he responded (via Tweet), “Not even sure where to start with that one.” The iPhone App Store’s rejection process has long been criticized for this specific reason. source
