Tech: Someone remade a Queen song using a Super Mario World level

  • Well, that’s one way to pay tribute to Freddie Mercury. A crafty “Super Mario World” level hacker (who also knows their way around automation) managed to craft “Don’t Stop Me Now,” “Guitar Hero”-style, using a platformer. Awesome, but nerdy.

Tech: We’re super thankful for this massive Internet-allowing machine

  • This may be one of the most beautiful machine we’ve ever seen. It’s massive, it’s ugly, but its creation allowed the Internet to flow freely. It’s a packet switcher – nowadays your tiny little Linksys router does way more than this, but God, it’s beautiful. Above, our boy Leonard Kleinrock gives us a tour of its guts. source

Tech: Magic Mouse praise: “It’s the first Apple mouse that doesn’t suck”

Despite the fairly high praise, Wired doesn’t claim it’s absolutely perfect, as they only gave it a 7 out of 10. Why? It doesn’t do Expose and Spaces. Lame. source

Tech, U.S.: Free speech trumps hate speech for Google In Michelle Obama case

  • Although Google reserves the right to address such requests individually, Google views the integrity of our search results as an extremely important priority. Accordingly, we do not remove a page from our search results simply because its content is unpopular or because we receive complaints concerning it.
  • A message from Google • Describing their decision to keep a now-removed racist image of Michelle Obama on the site. It wasn’t for reasons of racism, but rather the integrity of the results. The image, which grotesquely portrayed Obama as a monkey, has since been removed by its Chinese owner, who apologized for putting it online, as well as the controversy it caused. source

Tech: If you have a killer Twitter product, polish it so Biz Stone buys it

  • That is something we are definitely interested in. We made an acquisition last year that turned out to be an outstandingly good decision.
  • Twitter co-founder Biz Stone • Discussing the possibility of making more acquisitions for the site. Nothing specific is on the horizon, but considering the massive popularity of many of the apps out there, Twitter might want to consider buying one. Our vote? Echofon, just so it can change its name back to TwitterFox. Echofon is such a stupid name, and TwitterFox so isn’t! source

Tech: Robert Scoble calls web curation a “billion-dollar opportunity”

  • Here’s a test. Take a tweet of mine in your favorite reader like Seesmic or TweetDeck, click a single button on your iPhone and then type or leave some audio right underneath that Tweet and click another button to post it. Hint: you can’t. That, to me, is opportunity.
  • Super-blogger/tweeter/nerd maven Robert Scoble • Discussing one of his super-brilliant ideas – real-time Web curation. He suggests that people should be able to take what’s put in front of them and organize and add commentary to it simply. And it needs to be simple like and well-integrated with Facebook and Twitter. We couldn’t agree more. (Disclosure: We’ve been using news-specific curator Publish2 of late to post on ShortFormBlog, and it’s a pretty good link-organizing tool for journalists.) source
