Politics: The guy who made the Obama Joker riff: Dennis Kucinich fan

Firas Alkhateeb didn’t do the Obama “Socialism” poster, but he created the Time cover off of which it was based. His problem with Obama? No substance. source

Biz, Politics: Alan Greenspan thinks the economic recovery is fleeting

  • I think we’re OK for the next six months. We are getting a recovery in (housing) starts and motor vehicles, but the process doesn’t have legs to it.
  • Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan • Giving his prognosis for the economy. Greenspan spent 18 years chairing the reserve, and he knows what he’s talking about. Greenspan’s tenure has been attacked by some critics who say that the housing bubble burst on his dime, but he defends what he did during the time there. One interesting factoid that came out of this: Greenspan says the auto market is oversaturated, with 20 percent more vehicles on the road than licensed drivers. What’s wrong with that? Everyone needs a car AND a truck! • source

Politics: Max Headroom: Sick of talking about health care yet?

  • Not so public Kathleen Sebelius, the Health and Human Services Secretary, spent her morning trying to explain to John King how the single-payer public option wasn’t needed to reform health care.

  • Not so public Kathleen Sebelius, the Health and Human Services Secretary, spent her morning trying to explain to John King how the single-payer public option wasn’t needed to reform health care.

  • AARPing biased Fox News stacked the deck against Obama in this interview with an AARP leader on whether they support his health care plan, prefacing it with a slanted two-minute introduction.

  • Captain obvious Usually-bright journalist David Gregory was on “Meet the Press” this morning analyzing the health care debate, saying it’s gotten away from Obama. No, really bro? Duh. Way to call it, man.

Politics: Jon Stewart nails Glenn Beck on his health care hypocrisy

  • Beyond apparently being racist and losing advertisers, Glenn Beck seems to have flip-flopped entirely on his opinion of health care in the process of switching networks, as Jon Stewart casually notices in this Daily Show segment. Examiner blogger Ryan Witt does Beck a favor and shows he’s slightly more consistent than Stewart claims. However, it’s still a flip. (Unrelated side note: Comedy Central needs to fix their embed codes. They use tables and are necessarily messy.)source

Politics: Yes or no? Rep. John Culberson spins hard on “Hardball”

  • Both sides look bad here to some degree – there’s smoke coming out of the ears of “Hardball’s” Lawrence O’Donnell, while Rep. John Culberson does everything he can to avoid saying “yes” or “no” to questions which circle around whether Medicare and Social Security are socialism, and how he can support them when he doesn’t support health care. It gets ugly, even for a political debate on “Hardball.”source

Politics: Well, that truce between O’Reilly and Olbermann didn’t last long

  • We were hopeful at both companies to put a more civil tone in these discussions. No one at GE ever told anyone at NBC how to cover the news or what to cover.
  • General Electric spokesman Gary Sheffer • Regarding renewed interest in the debate between Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly and MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann. After stories came out about the truce last month, both talk-show gabbers went back to their bag of tricks, with O’Reilly attack NBC owner General Electric. It’s given him some big ratings, while Olbermann, who isn’t playing to his network either, is kinda holding steady ratings-wise. Moral of the story: They shouldn’t have told anyone about the truce. • source

Politics: Lyndon LaRouche makes Glenn Beck look like a pacifist

Obama as a Nazi
  • The pamphlet Today, before we got on the D.C. Metro at Chinatown, we noticed that the usual Nation of Islam-types in front of the station were joined by people handing out pamphlets for the Lyndon LaRouche political action committee. And, boy, that pamphlet was a bag of crazy. He’s a crackpot, but this time he crossed the line. And we’re concerned that it’s actually getting traction. source

  • What’s inside? The cover features the photo above, a clearly-photoshopped image of Obama designed to make him look like a Nazi. And the text only sells it more: “We must emphasize the fact of his adopting a virtual carbon-copy of the Adolf Hitler health-care policies, later judged to be genocide, of September 1, 1939,” LaRouche writes. This is just evil. source

  • Our take LaRouche affiliates with the Democrats, but they don’t want him. This is why. This pamphlet argues for racism, hate, and the worst corners of our society. And based on this Google Image Search, it’s getting far too much currency. On the plus side, he’s almost 90. He’ll be dead soon, and hopefully this bile will go away along with him. source

Politics, U.S.: On death panels and bold-faced lies spread about health care

  • I guess what surprised me is the ferocity, it’s much stronger than I expected. It’s people who are ideologically opposed to Mr. Obama, and this is the opportunity to weaken the president.
  • AARP executive vice president John Rother • Which supports changing the health care plan, on attacks the plan has received, including suggestions of a “death panel” by Sarah Palin, a claim which is completely false but has much more traction than it should. The claims have much in common with the claims used to kill the health care movement in 1994. One conservative commentator from that era who flipped sides, David Brock, put it best: “In the 90s, every misrepresentation under the sun was made about the Clinton plan and there was no real capacity to push back. Now, there is that capacity.” • source

Politics, Sports: PETA should have leveraged Michael Vick, but they didn’t

  • For all the good they’ve done, PETA has a way of alienating itself from the general public. And there is no group of people that is more ‘general public’ than football fans.
  • 24SevenCities blogger Jesse Scaccia • Discussing PETA’s current role in the Michael Vick saga. Rather than be willing to forgive and leverage Vick’s role in what happened, they released this cutting quote: “PETA and millions of decent football fans around the world are disappointed that the Eagles decided to sign a guy who hung dogs from trees. He electrocuted them with jumper cables and held them under water.” We’re with Jesse: Longtime vegetarian, in favor of many of the beliefs they espouse. But they could have leveraged Vick as a huge media opportunity. • source

Biz, Politics: The campaign to kill Glenn Beck’s advertisers is kinda working

  • Former advertisers
    1. State Farm
    2. Lawyers.com
    3. Procter & Gamble
    4. Progressive
    5. S.C. Johnson
    6. GEICO
    7. Men’s Wearhouse
    8. Sargento
Beck’s advertiser list has been cut significantly after an orchestrated campaign to attack the Fox News talk-show yakker for comments like those in the video above. And it’s had an effect. Thanks to left-leaning organizations like Media Matters taking Beck to task for racist and/or below-the-belt attacks on Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi, these advertisers are now out.source
