World: Cuba’s crazy non-communist-sounding idea: Property sales

  • then For decades, Cuban gave its citizens socialist housing, which was tough to move out of because that required government approval; many families and even divorced couples stayed together under the same roof as a result.
  • now Cuba’s changing its policies in reaction to economic concerns, it’s now allowing people to buy and sell property — which sounds kinda like capitalism. The government, however, says they’re working hard to protect socialism.  source

Politics: A little perspective on this whole deficit mess

  • This graph, courtesy of the New York Times, has been making the rounds today, and it’s worth examining. Note that health care reform, much-maligned by the right as deficit-killer, cost less than even the most inexpensive of George W. Bush’s policies (that policy being Medicare Part D). Note also that the Bush tax cuts alone added more to the deficit than all of President Obama’s new policies combined — and that’s including projected spending over the course of a theoretical second term.  source

Politics: Americans for Prosperity creates anti-socialism scare video

  • As a follow-up to last night’s post, it’s probably good to point out that when you’re building propaganda pieces, the tone is everything. So, showing images of supporters of socialism at a Democratic Party rally doesn’t seem so bad on its own. But when you add the Russian National Anthem like our friends at the Koch-brothers-funded Americans for Prosperity, it takes a sinister tone. We’d say “disagree with socialism, don’t demonize it,” but we know that Americans for Prosperity receive so much money that they can pretty much do whatever they want. Oh wait, according to the rules on 501(c)(3) nonprofits, they shouldn’t be making videos like this at all. source

Politics: Obama: Republicans “do what they’re told.” Them’s fighting words!

  • We get the feeling that the summer of socialism allegations has permanently damaged the president’s ability to rise above political name-calling like this. Come on, Obama, don’t stoop to their level! Don’t trash on the GOP!

U.S.: Obama’s education speech: Officially capitalist, not socialist

  • And no matter what you want to do with your life – I guarantee that you’ll need an education to do it. … You can’t drop out of school and just drop into a good job. You’ve got to work for it and train for it and learn for it.
  • President Barack Obama • In lengthy prepared remarks to students, which he’ll say later today. Obama’s been getting lots of unfounded criticism lately about attempting to indoctrinate the kids into socialism with his speech. Yeah, whatever. This speech is as American as apple pie and tea bagging. • source

Politics: Michael Moore sticks his fat, grubby dagger into capitalism

  • Capitalism is an evil, and you cannot regulate evil. … You have to eliminate it and replace it with something that is good for all people and that something is democracy.
  • Michael Moore • In the ending monologue to his new movie, “Capitalism: A Love Story,” which is hitting the Venice film festival today. His reasoning? Capitalism – at least the form practiced on Wall Street – is damaging to our economy, and bankers and investors are gambling with our money. He has a point in the midst of the rhetoric, but considering that we have a president who regularly gets called a socialist, it’s probably going to be lost on the American public. • source

Politics, U.S.: This Obama school speech thing has legs. Why?

  • The thing that concerned me most about it was it seemed like a direct channel from the president of the United States into the classroom, to my child. I don’t want our schools turned over to some socialist movement.
  • Pearland, Tex. parent Brett Curtis • Describing the reason why he’s keeping his three children home. Why is this a story? Because Web sites and conservative talk show hosts started giving it attention on Wednesday, despite the fact that it had been planned for weeks. We hate the fact that this is now a big story. Teachers are largely in a cruddy situation because of the controversy: If they show it, conservatives are up in arms. If they don’t, they’re disrespecting the president. We don’t like this one bit. • source
