Politics: A little perspective on this whole deficit mess

  • This graph, courtesy of the New York Times, has been making the rounds today, and it’s worth examining. Note that health care reform, much-maligned by the right as deficit-killer, cost less than even the most inexpensive of George W. Bush’s policies (that policy being Medicare Part D). Note also that the Bush tax cuts alone added more to the deficit than all of President Obama’s new policies combined — and that’s including projected spending over the course of a theoretical second term.  source

Politics: Barbara Bush (Dubya’s daughter) joins campaign for gay marriage

  • It seems like only yesterday: It was 2004, and George W. Bush proposed a constitutional gay marriage ban in all fifty states as a reelection issue, under the supervision of his campaign manager Ken Mehlman. Now Mehlman is openly gay, Bush has said he has no interest in politics, and his daughter is cutting commercials for New Yorkers for Marriage Equality. Maybe things do have a way of working out in the end? source

Bush held an event honoring Obama’s public service last night, and despite the protests outside the Texas auditorium, it was a warm, festive affair inside. The elder Bush said that in challenging times, “the R or D next to your name is irrelevant.” Obama agreed. • source
