Offbeat: Tit-for-tat: Google makes Topeka’s name their own

  • In fact, Topeka Google Mayor Bill Bunten expressed it best: ‘Don’t be fooled. Even Google recognizes that all roads lead to Kansas, not just yellow brick ones.’
  • Google Chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt • In a post describing the company’s decision to change their name from Google to Topeka. The yearly April Fool’s joke is a homage to Topeka, Kansas, which symbolically changed their name to Google last month in an attempt to become part of the company’s trial super-fast broadband program. On the plus side, at least someone’s called Google still. (In other other news, it’s April Fool’s Day and Justin Bieber isn’t a father.) source

Offbeat: Police car finds a formidable foe in the form of a bulldog

  • Holy God. The bulldog wins. The Chattanooga Police Department learned on Sunday that they really need to stop buying front bumpers made out of rawhide for their police vehicles. Offbeat: Stupid robber calls ahead, gives bank time to prepare for arrest

  • I’ve heard of drive-up robberies where they rob the bank via drive-up windows. But I’ve never had somebody call ahead and say, ‘Get the money, we’re coming.’
  • Fairfield, Connecticut, Police Department Det. Lt. Michael Gagner • Regarding one of the stupidest bank robbers ever. Yesterday afternoon, the People’s Bank of Fairfield got a call demanding $100,000 or threatening a bloodbath. Unfortunately, they didn’t realize that they gave the bank ample time to call the police. Albert Bailey and a juvenile have been charged in the robbery. source

Of all the things you can build an art career out of, Legos seem fairly unlikely. But don’t tell that to Nathan Sawaya, who’s finding success with the blocks. source

Offbeat: Police keep messing with old couple because their computers suck

If this woman seems annoyed, it’s because she is. NYC police have raided her house 50 times since 2002 for no good reason other than a computer error. source
