Music: John Mayer is done with Twitter, and let’s face it, so are we

  • I just think Twitter as a form of communication, I think it’s over to be honest with you.
  • Guitar god/Oversharer John Mayer • Regarding his feelings on the service. Dude hasn’t tweeted much lately and is claiming on stage that it’s just not that cool anymore. We wonder why that might be. Is it possibly because of this? Or maybe this (which didn’t start on Twitter but certainly ended there)? Which is why we’re going to quit Twitter. Right now. That’s it. No more Twitter for us. Now, excuse us while we tweet this post. Gah! We already fell off the freaking wagon! source

  • $2.1B the size of Ford’s profit
in the current quarter; that makes a whole year of profit for them

Offbeat: When this Amtrak train goes by, it goes “mooooooooooo”

  • Amtrak’s new train runs on beef. Yes, beef. The travel option of third-to-last resort (it tops Chinatown buses and *shudder* Greyhound buses) has a new line running from Oklahoma City to Forth Worth, and it’s using a type of biodiesel fuel called B20. What’s B20, you ask? 80 percent diesel fuel, 20 percent beef byproducts. Yeah, it’s technically biodiesel, but eww. source

Biz: People still getting plastic surgery – just less of it (fortunately)

  • $10 billion spent on plastic surgery procedures last year source
  • » The recession hit, kinda: With spending down and unemployment up, fewer people have been going under the knife for vanity. But not by much. It’s down just three percent from 2008.

Politics: Sen. Lindsey Graham an oddball ’cause he tries to compromise

  • I guess the word ‘maverick’ is out of vogue. But I would say he’s courageous. He’s willing to risk political capital in order to solve problems. Everybody scratches their head about it, because such a trait is unusual.
  • GOP consultant John Weaver • Regarding Sen. Lindsey Graham and his ability to put his political stature on the line to actually work with people. The climate change thing has him angry because he spent a lot of time putting himself on the line. It’s led to a tight relationship with the White House, even if it is a little biting at times. “Rahm has a good relationship with him,” said press secretary Robert Gibbs. “The president has a good relationship with him. Many folks here do.” source

U.S.: The military’s top enemy, after the Taliban? PowerPoint

  • “When we understand that slide, we’ll have won the war.” The military has a problem with PowerPoint presentations taking over their lives, to the point where some top military officers refuse to use the program. If it sounds like an absurdly postmodern problem for a major military force to have, that’s because it is. Our military is becoming a “Dilbert” strip. source

Tech: Apple’s censorship police targets another op-ed cartoonist

Apple rejected cartoonist Daryl Cagle’s iPhone app, “Tiger Woods Cartoons,” because it ridiculed a pulbic figure. Yo Apple, this is a stupid policy. source

Biz: Craigslist’s “Adult Services” controversial, makes lots of money

  • $122
    million
expected revenues for the no-frills classified site in 2010 alone; at least 70 percent of that is pure profit (and mostly from employment ads)
  • $39
    million
    in revenue will come from
the controversial for-pay “Adult Services” section, made in the wake of the Craigslist Killer source
  • » Printing their own money: The site has a small staff for what it is, but despite that, it’s a total gold mine. For every employee Craigslist has (around 30), the company makes $4 million in revenue and at least $2.9 million in profit, a level so high you simply won’t find it anywhere else in the industry. We wish we made $3 million in profits per employee.

World: Manuel Noriega still in custody, but pretty well-traveled

  • Panama Noriega became de facto ruler in 1983 and, while in power was accused
of election rigging and drug trafficking.
  • Miami After he was captured
by the U.S., where he was convicted for drug trafficking, he was jailed for over 20 years.
  • Paris In 1999, Noriega was convicted in absentia on money laundering charges. He just got extradited today. source

Politics: Ultra-liberal major city to boycott ultra-conservative major state

  • We want to send a message. There are consequences when you target a whole people.
  • San Francisco City Supervisor David Campos • In calling for a boycott of the state of Arizona, along with companies based there, due to their newly passed immigration law – which critics say permits racial profiling. Which is a big freaking deal, kids. While the city is still unsure of the boycott’s economic impact, “We do know that we won’t be sending any city employees to conferences in Arizona,” according to Campos. The resolution will go in front of the city’s board on Tuesday. source
