Tech, World: The iPhone’s sales suck in Japan so much, it’s being given away

  • It’s not full-featured enough Japanese consumers are a picky bunch when it comes to their phones, and as neat as the iPhone is to the rest of the world, the phone is missing a number of key things – a high-quality video camera, a TV tuner and multimedia messaging.
  • The plans suck The big problem many consumers in Japan have with the iPhone is not its design – which the Japanese don’t like either – but the cost. The monthly plans start at $60, which is high. They recently started giving the phones away with a two-year plan. Oof. source

U.S.: Backin’ off the pot: Obama yields marijuana policy to states

  • What the president said during the campaign, you’ll be surprised to know, will be consistent with what we’ll be doing here in law enforcement. What he said during the campaign is now American policy.
  • Attorney General Eric Holder • on the policy the government will take with regards to pot, specifically medical marijuana. Advocates say the policy change is encouraging. Culture: The football superstar married the supermodel. Obviously.

  • Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen. Married. The couple exchanged vows last night in a “secret” ceremony at a Catholic church, which probably was a pain to get to because, seriously, how often do people get married on a random Thursday? Just sayin’. In case you forgot, Brady is the QB for the New England Patriots who was out this year due to injury, and Bundchen is the Brazillian model who’s currently wallpapering thousands of Windows desktops worldwide. source

Tech: Facebook makes changes to seem less evil, more open

  • The past week reminded us that users feel a real sense of ownership over Facebook itself, not just the information they share.

U.S., World: Who likes the Iraq plan? Who doesn’t?

  • Democrats = Boo. Many Democrats think leaving 50,000 troops in Iraq until 2011 is too many for too long. It also breaks a campaign promise by Obama, who said it would be over sooner. “50,000 is a little higher number than I anticipated,” said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
  • Republicans = Yay! Republicans seem largely on board with the president who chose the deadline based on military suggestions. The final end date is January 1, 2012. Rep. John McHugh of New York said the plan “is one that we should pray for, plan for and work toward.” source
