Politics: Rep. Darrell Issa may issue subpoenas over “Fast and Furious” program

  • Clearly, he knew when he said he didn’t know. Now the question is what did he know and how is he going to explain why he gave that answer.
  • Rep. Darrell Issa • Asking on “Fox News Sunday” why Attorney General Eric Holder gave Issa, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman, a seemingly false answer on his knowledge of Operation Fast and Furious, a failed gun-tracking program. The program has since been tied to numerous murders in the U.S. and Mexico — and the results of which are still showing up in the hands of Mexican drug cartels. Issa wants answers. “People at the top of (the) Justice (Department) were well briefed, knew about it and seemed to be the command and control and funding for this program,” he claimed. Holder told him during a May Judiciary Committee hearing that he had only known about the program for a few weeks — an answer which doesn’t please Issa, and may lead to him issuing subpoenas to the Justice Department later this week. source

Politics: Eric Holder will do whatever it takes to get more of “The Wire”

  • I want to speak directly to Mr. Burns and Mr. Simon: Do another season of “The Wire.” That’s actually at a minimum… If you don’t do a season, do a movie. We’ve done HBO movies, this is a series that deserves a movie. I want another season or I want a movie. I have a lot of power, Mr. Burns and Mr. Simon.
  • Attorney General Eric Holder • Giving voice to the innermost hopes and dreams of “The Wire” fans everywhere. Holder was at an event featuring members from the revered HBO series, which used clips from the show to illustrate the perils children face in areas rife with drug abuse, when he made his forthright demand. We second this wholeheartedly! Also, for all we know, this could be a message from the top —  President Obama himself has made his love for the series known (his favorite character is Omar). source

Politics: Based on this statement, Eric Holder needs to toke up

  • We will vigorously enforce the (federal law) against those individuals and organizations that possess, manufacture or distribute marijuana for recreational use, even if such activities are permitted under state law.
  • Obama Attorney General Eric Holder • In a pledge he made to uphold the nation’s marijuana laws even as California appears to be heading towards legalization with Prop 19. Yo, Eric, you wanna get a hit of this? You need to mellow out, man. It’s not that bad. source

Politics: Eric Holder plans to nod his head through another meeting

As regular reader Tom Alday will rightly remind us, Eric Holder didn’t read Arizona’s 10-page immigration law. But he’s about to talk about it with a bunch of big-city police chiefs. source

  • last week Almost immediately the Pakistani
    Taliban claimed responsibility for
    the failed Times Square attack.
    Then, later, they denied it.
  • “this week” On the Sunday talk show, Attorney
    General Eric Holder pinned the
attack on them. We’re waiting for a
    reversal of the claim. source

Politics: Attorney General Eric Holder knows how to use big words

  • I am not trying to dodge this one, I just don’t think the possibility of catching him alive is infinitesimal.
  • Attorney General Eric Holder • Speaking in Congress today about the possibility of catching Osama bin Laden alive. He suggests that the al-Qaeda leader would either be killed by U.S. Special Forces or his own people as a protective measure. To wit, Holder also said a bunch of things which should make him seem like the Republicans’ least favorite person ever, suggesting if he were to make it the the U.S., he should be tried in criminal court. He also compared bin laden to Charles Manson, although Rep. John Culberson was leading him into making that statement. source

Politics: Keep America Safe isn’t exactly winning fans of its Eric Holder rip

  • Top sign your political ad isn’t as effective as you think it is: It gets criticized by your own side. This commercial, by Liz Cheney’s Keep America Safe organization, has been criticized by at least one former Bush staffer as being “unfair” for its lack of disclosure of attorneys who dared help Al-Qaeda detainees (despite working pro bono), and the subject of a letter from the non-partisan Brookings Institution criticizing it. Keep America Safe isn’t backing down, though. source

Politics: Max Headroom: Abortion, George Will and enemy combatants

  • Debbie does Fox Michigan Sen. Debbie Stabenow, a pro-choice Democrat, made a pitch for abortion – and equality in health care for women – on Fox News. Fox News’ Chris Wallace asked if she’d get the Stupak amendment – the key to the House bill passing – overturned, and she said yes. That’s a lefty for ya.
  • No mincing words On ABC’s “This Week,” George Stephanopoulos asked whether Sarah Palin advanced her political career thanks to the hype around “Going Rogue.” George Will – a dusty old conservative, by the way – quipped that what Palin is doing is “not politics.” Damn, he let her have it.
  • Pressure pointWhen Sen. Lindsey Graham asked Attorney General Eric Holder about enemy combatants facing civilian trials through history, it was like a pin prick. CNN speculates Holder knew the answer, but knew it’d hurt politically – Khalid Sheikh Mohammed would remain in jail no matter the outcome.

U.S.: Eric Holder: U.S. citizens becoming radical, but not in that cool ’90s way

  • I mean, that’s one of the things that’s particularly troubling: This whole notion of radicalization of Americans. Leaving this country and going to different parts of the world and then coming back, all, again, in aim of doing harm to the American people, is a great concern.
  • Attorney General Eric Holder • Discussing what he feels is one of the biggest threats to the U.S., Americans who become a radical threat to other Americans. This is obviously a big deal in the news at the moment in the wake of the arrest of Daniel Boyd and his associates. • source
