Culture: Tommy Lee’s helicopter pulled over, a.k.a. the best story ever

  • What happened? Lee, a rock star you may have heard of from a few videos, was riding shotgun in a helicopter that was flying too close to a LAPD copter in Glendale, Calif. Their helicopter was pulled over. We wish our life was this interesting. source

  • Drinking afterwards? TMZ.com, which broke the story (because they’re that awesome) claims that Lee was drinking immediately after landing, and was given a blood-alcohol test by the cops. The FAA is still investigating the incident, and the pilot might face charges. source

Offbeat, Tech: Spies. Intrigue. Espionage. In Redmond. At Microsoft.

  • Microsoft claims someone stole their ideas. MS claims that the CEO of a nearby corporation, Ancora Technologies, lied about being a former employee of Ancora when he was hired at the Windows-and-Xbox-and-Zune-pushing company in 2005. Ancora still existed, and Miki Mullor apparently took confidential documents for his company’s own benefit. Which is probably the coolest thing to ever happen at Microsoft. And that includes Songsmith. (Note: This case was settled in November. Read more here.) source

Sports: Michael Phelps + a bong = a great photo & a big problem

  • The deal with the Olympian 14-time gold medalist Michael Phelps is a number of things (guy with broad shoulders, dude who swims a lot, least-qualified SNL host ever), but the one that everybody forgets about is the most important: He’s still a dude in his early 20s, he’s not far removed from college, and he probably likes to party. He’s been in trouble with the law before (a DUI + probation) as a result of this, by the way. source

  • High endorsements, high times? Phelps, caught using a bong in a photo later printed in cheapo U.K. tabloid News of the World, has apologized for his actions: “I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment.” No word on what was in the bong (possibly pot, maybe hashish?), but the guy has an image to worry about. He makes millions in endorsements, and it could be a problem for him down the road. source

World: Iran to Gaza: Israel could start up this whole war thing again

  • The Islamic resistance should be prepared for any possible situation, including a fresh war in Gaza.
  • Ayatollah Ali Khamenei • Iran’s supreme leader, on the possibility of more fighting between Israel and Hamas in Palestine. Hamas and Iran were in close contact throughout last month’s war in Gaza, which resulted in many civilian deaths. Both sides declared separate cease-fires. • source
