U.S.: The oil is coming ashore! The Gulf Coast is screwed, guys.

There are reports that oil has gotten ashore already from the massive oil spill. Louisiana has already declared a state of emergency. This could be very bad. source

  • Dude got the emergency unemployment bill paid for. Thanks to a lot of complaining and even more grandstanding, the lame-duck Senator got the emergency unemployment bill paid for. How? Democrats decided to remove a biofuel tax credit on so-called “black liquor,” a byproduct of the paper manufacturing process, which is expected to save $24 billion – more than enough to cover the emergency $10 billion unemployment benefits bill. You win, Sen. Jim Bunning. Next time, do it on a bill that doesn’t screw over a million people, OK? source

U.S.: Kentucky’s in a scary, frozen state, and the National Guard’s helping

  • 92 counties have declared states of emergency in the wake of last week’s ice storm. That’s more than ¾ of the 120 total counties.
  • 4,600 troops from the National Guard were called up in the wake of the storm, which is responsible for at least 21 deaths since Tuesday. source
