Tech: David Pogue’s recent Verizon article leads to FCC investigation

  • If the ETF is meant to recoup the wholesale cost of the phone over the life of the contract, why does a $120 ETF apply?
  • The FCC • In a letter to Verizon asking them why their recently-changed early termination fees are so high. They also asked about these finicky $1.99 charges for accessing the Web our boy David Pogue brought up (along with these fees) in an article last month. This warms our heart because it proves the FCC is actually listening to concerns like these as they come up. source

Tech: Daily poll: On Verizon and AT&T’s laughable coverage lawsuit

  • Truth in advertising? Who really knows. But today, a federal court hears arguments in a case that debates whether Verizon’s being truthful about its 3G coverage in maps. The claim, of course, is put up by AT&T. To undercut both companies, we’ve created a poll clearly designed to joke on both of them. Put your little selector whereever. We don’t care.source

Tech: Verizon nickels-and-dimes its customers even more

  • We cancel these unintended requests as fast as we can hit the End key, but it doesn’t matter; they’ve told me that ANY data–even one kilobyte–is billed as 1MB. The damage is done.
  • A Verizon customer writing to New York Times tech columnist David Pogue • Discussing how the company has price-gouged them at $1.99 a pop. Hit the wrong button, and it goes to a screen that starts downloading data. When you try downloading that data, Verizon rounds up to a full megabyte and charges you. Pogue is livid about these kind of charges – along with the company’s new $350 penalty for switching providers early. These nickel-and-dime schemes make the company millions of dollars each year. And it isn’t right. • source
