  • what Some companies have chosen to stick with IE6 essentially because sites like Facebook and YouTube aren’t really usable with it anymore. Which is annoying as sin.

U.S., World: Haiti’s most in-need patients can’t go to the U.S. anymore

  • Florida stands ready to assist our neighbors in Haiti, but we need a plan of action and reimbursement for the care we are providing.
  • Florida Gov. Charlie Crist’s spokesperson, Sterling Ivey • Regarding the governor’s push for the U.S. to end airlifts from Haiti due to the fact they’re not getting paid. These airlifts, which were for critically-injured patients, were costing the Florida government millions – and they weren’t even the only state doing them! The military claims they ended the airlifts because the hospitals stopped accepting patients. This is bad all around. source

Tech, World: Some Wikipedia editors can’t see the kidnapping for the trees

  • Is that enough proof for you [expletives]? I was right. You were WRONG.
  • An anonymous Wikipedia editor based in Florida • On the news that New York Times reporter David Rohde was in fact captured by the Taliban and escaped. What this jerk didn’t know was that The Times, with the help of Wikipedia king Jimmy Wales himself, was blocking the information from the site to prevent news of his capture from reaching the mainstream media. If Rohde’s fate was known, they feared, his chances of escape would be much lower. Wales was not thrilled with the process but willing to help. “We were really helped by the fact that it hadn’t appeared in a place we would regard as a reliable source,” he said. “I would have had a really hard time with it if it had.” • source

Tech: Hate ads? Like art? Try out this new Firefox extension.

  • Sick of ads? In this era when it feels like every single page on the Interweb is loaded with ads, you may just feel like blocking them, and of course, many people do. (Hopefully not on this page, though. :( ) Firefox, in particular, allows you to easily sidestep ads.
  • A creative solution Add-Art allows you to replace those ads for Hardee’s with something a little more visually appealing (and less Thickburger) – a display of a contemporary artist’s work, gallery-style. Those spaces are gonna be there anyway. Might as well not be blank, right? source

Tech: Want to secure your wi-fi? Paint your office.

  • That’s what Japanese scientists say. It’s a pain in the butt to block wireless signals from the outside world if you’re the IT guy, but apparently, if your office’s paint job contains the right material (by adding certain metals), it can block those signals for reaching beyond the current room. And unlike other signal-blocking solutions, it’s actually kinda cheap to make. Neat. source
