Biz, Tech: Hewlett Packard’s stock reflects yesterday’s poor decision-making

  • » Investors were NOT happy with the news: HP fell down to its lowest level in years — a level so low that they last time it was at this nadir, Carly Fiorina had just left the company. We think this should tell HP something — killing off the race horse (WebOS) immediately after it starts the race is terrible business strategy, and investors will not react kindly to this. That was your future, HP, and you blew it because you had no idea how to feasibly make it work.

Biz, Tech: Palm-reading: The phone maker’s putting itself up for sale

  • What a sucky ending for a cool comeback story. A year ago, Palm looked like it had realistic potential to take on the iPhone in the market. Now, it’s a completely different story. The Pre is a good phone. WebOS is a good system. But now the company and its dwindling stock price are going up for sale, according to Bloomberg. The company has been burning through $80 million every three months just to keep up with Apple and Google. It’s not sustainable. source

  • good The Palm Pre Plus can now shoot video, and current Pre users can get that action in an upgrade.
  • better The platform (which also includes the Pixi) will support Flash and using the phone as a wi-fi hotspot (awesome).
  • best If you’re not super-interested in going the Sprint route, Verizon (and maybe AT&T) will also have it. Yay! source

Tech: Palm still sold Windows Mobile phones? Well, not anymore.

  • They’re going all in with WebOS. That’s what Palm CEO Jon Rubenstein, the former Apple guy who spearheaded the Pre, says. “We’ve made the decision to dedicate all future development resources to the evolution of webOS.” And honestly, while it sucks for Microsoft (it means Windows Mobile will lose even more marketplace traction), it’s a good move for Palm. Because, honestly, why fight momentum? source

  • +134% increase in smartphone sales this quarter for Palm; which sounds pretty good, until you consider …
  • -80% decrease in overall sales – Palm now has eight straight losing quarters to its name; ouch source

Tech: New reason to use a Pre instead of an iPhone: Sprint goes unlimited

  • For $69.99, you can get unlimited EVERYTHING. As many iPhone fans know, the main argument against using an iPhone is the carrier – AT&T’s plans are not only expensive, but they’re spotty and often arbitrarily leave iPhone users out of the loop. Sprint, which now has a killer phone of its own in the Palm Pre (and soon, the Palm Pixi), plans to offer an unlimited plan (Any Mobile, Anytime) which is cheaper than most of AT&T’s iphone plans, AND offers more bang for your buck. Now if only Palm can stop screwing up the marketing of their phones. source
