World: Australian Prime Minister < Migrant Female Redhead upstart

  • Conan O’Brien has a new doppelganger. Julia Gillard, who replaced Kevin Rudd as Australian prime minister just a little while ago, is one of the Labor Party’s leading lights, and might have a better chance of winning in an election. And she’s not even from Australia! She was originally born in Wales, just like all the truly awesome people out there. (We’re not Welsh.) source

Politics: Some guy: Jon Stewart should replace Katie Couric on CBS News

  • Stewart gets lots of laughs for his pointed commentaries about the news industry’s sacred cows. Perhaps he may secretly yearn to have credibility as a pundit, in addition to the appreciation as a comedian.
  • MarketWatch commentator Jon Friedman • Making a, uh, impassioned plea for CBS to consider “The Daily Show” host as its next anchor – if Katie Couric leaves, that is, which seems likely. His point? He has charisma, and he’s trusted immensely by his younger-leaning audience. Plus, it’d be fun to watch. So, you’re asking, why do we think this is a stupid idea? Because Jon Stewart’s authority as a media commentator is largely the product of his outside-looking-in dynamic. Oh, and he’s a comedian, not a journalist. Oh, and we think Anderson Cooper probably has the inside track for this. source

Tech: Bioprinting: It’s an inkjet printer for skin cells, burn victims!

  • We literally print the cells directly onto the wound. We can put specific cells where they need to go.
  • Wake Forest University student Kyle Binder • On a skin-grafting alternative device which he helped design. The thing works just like a inkjet printer for skin, spraying skin cells onto places that need them. It’s only been tested on mice so far, but bioprinting offers a lot of potential as a replacement for skin grafts, in part because the cells used are so young that they properly grow back into the skin. Mice were first, but pigs (who have similar skin to humans) are next. source

Tech: The Skiff newspaper e-Reader: Half-baked or wholehearted?

  • Is Skiff the future of the news? As with any of these e-Reader devices, it’s too early to call, but it’s closer than most. TechCrunch says it’s an attempt to put the genie in the bottle again. We like the fact that it does nice newspaper layout. source

U.S.: Ted Kennedy’s death creates a scramble for his seat

  • It has a profound impact on Massachusetts politics and elected office. Everything’s going to fall down because everyone will start moving around either jockeying for his seat or for the other positions that could open up.
  • Boston University statehouse program director Fred Bayles • Discussing the “domino effect” Kennedy’s death will have on politics in Massachusetts. Kennedy’s death leaves a reliable Democratic Senate seat open at the peak of the health care debate. While Kennedy had recently pushed for finding a replacement, he made the announcement just days before his death, leaving the state with little time to come up with a suitable replacement. We’re guessing the two-thirds majority stays put. • source
