Offbeat: Will “Boobquake” cause the earth to shake on Monday?

  • With the power of our scandalous bodies combined, we should surely produce an earthquake. If not, I’m sure [Sadeghi] can come up with a rational explanation for why the ground didn’t rumble.
  • Blogger Jen McCreight • Regarding her attempt to test out an Iranian cleric’s bizarre theory that promiscuous women cause earthquakes. The Indiana atheist’s suggestion? She wants to encourage female bloggers to take part in a “Boobquake,” where they dress as provocatively as possible and see whether or not it actually causes a quake. This is hilarious, plus it’s picking up steam. While McCreight backed off from her original stance slightly (she’s encouraging donations to Islamic womens’ rights organizations and earthquake recovery groups, and plans to add some scientific data to make it worthwhile), it should be fun to watch on Monday. As long as the cleric is actually wrong, that is. source

Tech: Psst: Sprint drops hint to iPad users to skip the 3G, go to 4G

  • With all the network problems AT&T is famous for having, getting a 4G wireless router from Sprint actually seems like a pretty appealing alternative to getting the 3G iPad. (Wired gave the Sprint Overdrive a very favorable review last month, going so far as to suggest you could probably get by with it, an iPod Touch and VoIP, and have better service than Apple’s AT&T miserableness.) It’s a good thing that Sprint has even gotten a case together that makes it even easier to switch. Excuse us while we briefly consider this brilliant idea. source

Politics: SNL reimagines Sarah Palin as Oprah, the network

  • If Sarah Palin had a cable network like this SNL performance suggests, it’d be great, because then we could completely avoid watching her.

Offbeat: We can rap movie titles just as effectively as this dude

  • 109 movie titles, five minutes. Despite that (and probably due to the fact that he fudged a couple of the fan-submitted movie titles, DeStorm’s rap is actually fairly coherent and pretty awesome. His beat sucks, but it doesn’t matter. Any dude who can fit that much into five minutes deserves a gold star and a cookie.

Tech: Opera decides to have fun with their iPhone app’s uncertain state

  • Opera Mini for iPhone submitted today. When do you think Apple will approve it?
  • Opera’s official Twitter account, @opera • Regarding their playing with fire and submitting their Opera iPhone app, which would directly compete with Mobile Safari to some degree (though they’ve been careful to note the differences in speed and approach). Opera is being downright clever about this, creating a contest where people suggest when the app will be approved by Apple, and giving away an iPhone to the winner. Clever bastards. Might as well have fun with uncertainty. source

Offbeat: We like stores that tell us exactly what they are, too

  • “I don’t need no Papa John’s, I go straight to Pizza!” This comedy rap, “Stores That Tell You Exactly What They Are,” is clever as heck, and has a killer guitar-driven beat to boot.

Offbeat: These guys have too many T-shirts, too much time on their hands

  • These guys have 222 T-shirts, and two days. They also have a stupidly clever idea on their hands. They probably need to get outside more often, but let’s laugh at them while they’re still inside! We won’t spoil the best parts of the video.

  • $35

has been donated to the Red Cross since the earthquake struck Tuesday; that’s better than Katrina and the 2004 tsunami
  • $5

in donations have come from text messages from mobile phones – which is easily a record and a genius way to donate source

Tech: Fair and Square: Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey simplifies buying stuff

square1201

  • OK, this is pretty cool. Jack Dorsey, one of the guys behind Twitter, has another startup which promises to revolutionize the process of credit/debit transactions. It’s a tiny square. It requires an audio jack. That’s it. Like Twitter, it’s dead simple. Unlike Twitter, it’s not a super-esoteric concept at the outset, begging people to figure out why it’s necessary. It just makes sense. Kudos. Could someone give us a reason to use this? source
