Offbeat: Humpback whales fighting: like an oceanic version of “Roadhouse”

whales1023
  • A chick comes into the bar brings attention to herself. A bunch of males, who had been pre-occupied with a round or two of pool or nursing their Yuenglings, come over and try to win some attention. All of a sudden, it turns into this massive fight for the lady’s attention. In the end, the hotshot stud who looks like a whale wins out. And this, friends, is why nature programming is awesome.source

Offbeat: It sucks being a pedestrian when someone’s reliving “Speed”

Tech: “Oh lord.” Twitter’s gotten through five billion tweets.

  • @robinsloan smelt it, so we’re pretty sure he dealt it. Twitter is like McDonald’s. So many tweets get made nowadays that you’re surprised someone is counting. But someone is counting, and that guy (Robin Sloan, formerly of Current Media) noticed that he managed to get tweet number five billion today. Does he win a prize? If not, he should. source

Music: Cello-playing dude covers LCD Soundsystem’s “Someone Great”

  • LCD Soundsystem never sounded so … regal. “Someone Great” is one of LCD Soundsystem’s best songs, and experimental cellist Andrew Carter brings it into a realm of beauty that not even the original reaches. We’re impressed.source

Offbeat: This guy’s a little too drunk to be getting more beer

  • If we were ever this drunk, one of you would tell us to stop, right? This guy has to hold his drunk self up by the door handle of the cooler where the beer’s at.source

Tech: Canabalt is the biggest dead-simple time-sucking game ever

Canabalt
  • Canabalt makes us want to stop everything we’re doing and just play it for six hours. But we couldn’t do that to you guys. The game, originally designed for the Experimental Gameplay Project, somehow turns a one-button game into the most-exciting duck-and-jump adventure this side of “Die Hard.” Best part? There’s an iPhone version that’s just as exciting (and simply-designed) as the Flash game.source
