Offbeat: High schoolers don’t see humor in U. of Chicago’s great joke

  • Dear University of Chicago, It fills me up with that gooey sap you feel late at night when I think about things that are really special to me about you. Tell me, was I just one in a line of many? Was I just another supple ‘applicant’ to you, looking for a place to live, looking for someone to teach me the ways of the world?
  • A University of Chicago sample entrance essay • Which, in our estimation, is the most amazing thing ever. It was sent to high school students last week in an attempt to inspire them to come up with killer application essays ahead of the January 2 deadline. Somehow, though, some people don’t see the humor in this amazingly well-crafted essay and are criticizing its sexual overtones. Others are freaking out big time, afraid that their essays are really similar. WTF?! Enjoy it for what it is, guys! source

Offbeat: “Best job in the world” = Being stung by deadly Irukandji jellyfish

  • Sure doesn’t sound like an awesome job. A while back, Ben Southall won a job as caretaker of a gorgeous Australian island. It was marketed as the “best job in the world,” and applications were accepted via YouTube. Well, one thing they didn’t tell you in the job description was that you could get stung by deadly Irukandji jellyfish and nearly die, as Southall did. This, friends, is why you shouldn’t have ambition. It stings you back sometimes. source

Offbeat: A cheeky Santa obesity study fooled a ton of major news outlets

The best part about this story is that it’s a hilarious example of how something gets published everywhere quickly. Even better? We didn’t post it. Hooray! source

Offbeat: Like lemmings, these cars hit an icy road and crash EVERYWHERE

  • Man, we sure like our tower. We can look at videos like this and just be happy we weren’t a party to any of this. Not a single car – even the parked ones, which probably got it worse – on this icy road went unscathed after it got so slick as to turn the road into a massive pinball game where the only winner is you, the viewer.

Offbeat: Clever bastards invert the Nigerian 419 scam, actually pay out

  • Because there always must be exceptions to the rule, these guys decided it’d be funny/awesome to write an e-mail like a spam, and offer $10,000, only to pay out as a devilishly amusing Christmas present, presented by the court of awesome. And boy, was the guy shocked when he found out they were actually going to give it to him. He didn’t want it, so they gave it to a Nigerian charity instead. And the cycle begins anew …

  • Super-goofy. Possibly fake. Definitely pretty dang awesome. This guy can use his tape measure to do just about anything, it seems. We’d like to see him get us a beer with it.

Offbeat: Marijuana cookie tragedy: A pro-pot advocate’s huge mistake

  • This story ends tragically, FYI. 🙁 A week after making pot-laced cookies for her 3-year-old grandson (at which point he had to go to the hospital), Erin Marcove committed suicide. Marcove, 44, was a huge advocate for medical marijuana in the Denver area. She made a cookie for the boy, who has since recovered, using “cannabis butter” – peanut butter mixed with marijuana – as the main ingredient. Awful. And awfully sad. source
